Blind and deaf man found dead in Port Charlotte pool

Charlotte County sheriff's detectives are investigating the death of a blind and deaf man found in a pool at a group home for the disabled Saturday in Port Charlotte.

Officers found Martin Malloy, 46, in the swimming pool at Brighter Living Home Care, 600 block of Chamber Street, after receiving a call at 4:10 p.m. Saturday.

A staff member had tried to perform CPR on Molloy, who was pronounced dead after being taken to Fawcett Memorial Hospital, according to a sheriff's report.

Brighter Living cares for people with mental and physical disabilities who cannot care for themselves, the report stated.

Detectives were told that the pool is usually locked and is equipped with door alarms. A Brighter Living worker said Molloy was blind, deaf, could not speak and had problems walking, a sheriff's office news release said.
