Bishop State Community College instructor Janice Rogers signs to her students during an American Sign Language (ASL) class Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, in Mobile, Ala. The college is the only institution of higher education in the state that offers an Associate in Science degree in ASL, which is a two-year program. This unique program has been a program of study at Bishop State’s Main Campus since 1981. Some Bishop State students take the class as a foreign language or as an elective. Along with ASL, the college offers Interpreter Training, a certificate program designed to provide students with a foundation for several other fields of study. This program can be completed in 24 months but requires a student be skilled in ASL before enrolling in the program. ASL is the most widely used form of sign language in the United States. Estimates as to the number people living in the U.S. who are deaf or hard of hearing range from anywhere between 22 million and 36 million. ASL interpreters are employed as facilitators of communication between Deaf or hard of hearing and hearing people. The services of a sign language interpreter are often needed in educational institutions, vocational rehabilitation centers, hospitals, courts, local school districts and community service agencies.
