oh, Beach Girl - nope, am not from UP<in relation to ques. in other thread>
but I did visit there and went to college up North in my state which does have UP influence, so that's how I learned about pasties.
Now some poor misguided soul is going to think I'm using the OTHER sort of pasties!! Oh well.
My dad grew up in the Keewanauw Peninsula, so I was introduced to the wonders of pasties at a very young age when we went to visit relatives there. I have a wonderful recipe for them that my grandmother used to make for my grandfather, as he was a copper miner and took them for his lunch quite frequently, back in the day. Considering he died around 1925, that recipe has been around for a LONG time.
They are SO good. Wonderful on a cold winter's day when you want something warm to really fill you up, or served cold for a summer lunch. It takes a while to make them, though; not exactly compatible with today's mind-set of "30-minute meals."
Yes, it is. That and her spaghetti sauce recipe are treasures. I don't often make either one properly (if the spaghetti sauce is made with meat -which I don't even do very often - it's supposed to simmer for at least 2 hours). But they are really good.
My mom used to say she was very glad she was raising Italian kids, because we were all good cooks. Better than her English/Dutch self, I have to say. 'course maybe getting us to make dinner was all part of her fiendishly clever plan... ;-)
