A woman who has dedicated her life to helping deaf youths recently received recognition for her work from Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP) in Tunis, Tunisia.

Nileshni Sekar, who is the Arts Supervisor of Foundation for Rural Enterprises N Development, was presented the Youth and ICT Award for her work with deaf youths of Lautoka in the creation of Friend's Fiji Style Handmade Cards.

The award is presented in recognition of young social entrepreneurs who have transformed social development opportunities into a sustainable social enterprise through innovative use of information and communication technologies.

Ms Sekar was announced as a winner of the award in November for her contribution towards the project through the use of the Internet.

Ms Sekar, who wanted to provide the youths with an innovative method of creating the handmade cards, researched the technique on Internet.

After conducting an extensive research on the method of quilling, Ms Sekar began teaching the deaf youths, who are part of the FRIEND outreach program, the technique.

Quilling is the art of curling paper, which is now being used by the deaf youths, to create beautiful designs.

Ms Sekar said now the students were using the technique to create eye-catching and holiday designs.

She said all the youths involved in the handmade card program were part of FRIEND's income generating project.

She said they had managed to sell thousands of cards, which have been available since June 2004 through outlets across Fiji.

Ms Sekar said it was an honour being recognised for such a prestigious award.

Ms Sekar was flown to Tunisia with seven other people from around the world on November 15 for the award presentation.

The modest young woman said she was just doing her part in trying to help deaf youths achieve a sustainable income.

She said just like FRIEND, she believed in a holistic approach to poverty alleviation to ensure the long-term development of poor and marginalised communities.

FRIEND was established three years ago and is a non-government organisation supporting the efforts of communities to lift them out of poverty.
