Audiologist Louise Hugo says deaf people should be assessed every year but the reality is that many cannot afford to be tested.

Elmarie van Rooyen from Silverton has not been to an audiologist in nine years and was one of five deaf residents from Silverton given the opportunity to visit an audiologist in Hatfield last week Thursday.

Ethel Lues, who is involved in corporate skill’s development, sponsored the tests.

Ethel was born deaf but says it was a ‘miracle’ when her hearing was restored at age three.

As a result of her history, she feels strongly about the needs of disabled people who are often discriminated against in the work place and do not receive the necessary medical support in terms of their disabilities.
“The needs of disabled people are often swept under the rug and their employers do not ensure that they are on medical aid schemes that assist them when they need medical care.

“That is why I decided to take them to an audiologist. We will then see what they need in terms of hearing aids, which can cost thousands of rands,” says Ethel.
