er.....why cant u make it simple than make it harder on us to undy what u mean......make it more simple not this too confused cuz i dont undy any shit abt this..... :rl:

hey steven....wud u like to solve the plm with me and sweetheart??? if u dont mind...since spice cant be online if u dont mind.....i wont insult or anything.... :ty: ;) :ily:

to be or not to be, that is the question
That is the quote from Hamlet

good good that s so right the question is do you use that quote to make it apply with your life? its very useful wonder why people dont use that

The reason more people don't do that is simple. It requires one to think about it and if there is anything you can do to get people messed up...that is it. We are creature of habits and old habits die hard.

Who amongst us start the day thinking this? I know none of you do (neither do I ;-) because routine is much more comfortable. Take this challenge...take your morning routing and change it around each and everyday. I bet you will forget to do something because you are forced to think hard about it and try to remember what you didn't do. Of course, this is not what you are getting at but it does illuminate a truth. Get more complicated and things are quite hairy with the choices one faces everyday.

moron

hey you {edited}!
"to be or not to be "
is a question of suicide! not murder! hamlet was talking to himself asking ,if he should kill him self or not.

that is not a philosphy question. it is a question of action,do or do not. no pycho bable required. pull the trigger ,slash the knife......

a philosphy question would be ..why does the world need self inflated blow hards like darkflare? is their a purpose? does it help the world? does it make things worse?

a better question is....
why am i wasting my time typing this? :smash:

geesh, this guy need to lighten it up..
anyhow about being philosphy inspiriation that stated by; - "Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It's not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything." - Muhammad Ali

any ideas what he meant by that?

vfr is right, the "to be, or not to be" soliloquy from Hamlet is about Hamlet deciding whether he should kill himself or not.

it sounds like you're talking about free will vs. causal determination, or some sort of existentialism.

The problem with free will and causal determination is that we believe that things happen because something prior has caused it to happen. Like, if you hold a ball in the air and let go, it will drop. Letting it go caused it to be taken over by the laws of gravity and drop.

But if you take that everything is causally determined, aren't we made up of a bunch of causally determined particles? Then aren't all our actions causally determined? It turns out that free will is very hard to reconcile with causal determination.

As far as existentialism, you'd probably want to read Nietzche.

In fact, if you want to do any philosophy with any seriousness, there's a LOT of reading you should do. Thousands of years people have pondered these questions, and chances are your first thoughts about something have been discussed ad nauseum hundreds of years ago.

.

Camus always came first to mind when I thought of existentialism.

En Sprache Zarathustra!

As for Camus, he's best remembered for his opening lines in the Stranger story, "Mother died today." I also liked Kafka's works, but based on purely literary merit, such as the Metamorphosis.

One time, I took a Philosophy class at Gally. I drove the teacher crazy by channelling various philosophers in my essay answers, i.e., 'Essay answer composed by Socrates'.

Sure, this 400 year old quote from Hamlet talks about his contemplation of ending his life but this quote can be used to ignite discussion of any topic under the sun, makes us think, etc. I mean if we see a topic or thread entitled, "To be or not to be; that is the question", make sure to do a double-take to see if it's related to suicide cuz these days, it prolly won't be the issue at hand.

duh!

but darko wanna be missed the point completely......he challenges us to philosophy...??? challenge? then he uses a suicide quote..!?
it is clear he does not understand the concept of a "philosophy"

Latin philosophia, from Greek, from philosophos philosopher
1 a (1) : all learning exclusive of technical precepts and practical arts (2) : the sciences and liberal arts exclusive of medicine, law, and theology <a doctor of philosophy> (3) : the 4-year college course of a major seminary b (1) archaic : PHYSICAL SCIENCE (2) : ETHICS c : a discipline comprising as its core logic, aesthetics, ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology
2 a : pursuit of wisdom b : a search for a general understanding of values and reality by chiefly speculative rather than observational means c : an analysis of the grounds of and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs

so ...one of the basic principals of philosophy..there is no right or wrong philosophy..just a different veiw point......so..challenge? dont make me laugh.

Hey, take it easy on darkflare83. :) There are always opportunities to transcend our limits, and this is certainly one of them.

To start with, I use the guidelines on the logical fallacies from Stephen's Guide on how to conduct myself in a philosophical debate. I don't know everything out there, and that is one of the limits we must unite ourselves with in my humble opinion.. or we will never be more wise (or allowing?!) than we already are. You kinda know when a person is posturing (or being a poser?), but.. it is up to you to not do the same. Heh! :)

I think of Sartre and Kierkegaard. I spend my days making fun of Existentialism, but I do appreciate what Kierkegaard offers in Either/Or.
