Alabama Institute For The Deaf And Blind Gives Students New Confidence - News - NBC13.com

A ribbon cutting marks the beginning of what these Alabama Institute For The Deaf And Blind students are calling independence.

This five thousand square foot facility will serve as the new independent living center on campus. It will be home for 12 students including Kelvin Black who is visually impaired.

"it's going to help me because i won't have to depend on someone for the next few years," said Kelvin Black.

The center is designed to teach the students daily living skills.

"Coming up with your own routine, helps you with cleaning, washing your clothes and doing your homework and studying." said Jonathan Scott Ingram.

Battling high winds during the ceremony, Principal Carl Ponder told the group the hands on experience the students receive will allow them to reach their full potential.

"Jamel...I just love this place...I just love this place." said Kelvin Black.

The students say the independent living will help them in the real world by giving them the confidence they need.
