People who are deaf and hard of hearing should have an easier time communicating with airline and car rental personnel and other staffers at the Greater Rochester International Airport under a program Monroe County announced today.

The airport is installing computer technology that will allow deaf and hard of hearing passengers and others to send instant messages to key personnel. Airport officials believe they are the first to deploy the technology throughout an entire terminal.

The system consists of small dedicated messaging terminals, a cable and software. It allows users to send typed messages back and forth. The devices will be located at each airline ticket counter and car rental station, at the Greater Rochester Visitor's Association booth, at the central security checkpoint, at airport dispatch and at airport administration.

Monroe County purchased the systems from Interpretype LLC of Henrietta, which has installed the devices worldwide. The county believes the devices "will help make travel easier and more efficient for those who are deaf or hard of hearing," Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks said at a morning news conference.
