Packed Ferry Smashes Into Harbor Near Vancouver
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, (Reuters) - A ferry packed with commuters and vacationers plowed into the wharf at a Vancouver area harbor Thursday and smashed dozens of small boats, although there were no initial reports of injuries.
The ferry Queen of Oak Bay was entering Horseshoe Bay harbor northwest of Vancouver in the morning when it appeared to lose power, causing it to run aground in one of the busiest passenger ports on Canada's West Coast, eyewitnesses said.
Media reports said about 1,000 passengers were aboard the ferry, which was returning to the mainland from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Passengers and vehicles were forced to stay on board the BC Ferries-operated vessel.
The cause of the accident was not immediately clear but CBC Television quoted the Coast Guard as saying a steering problem may have played a role.
