ABC 7 News - Accreditation for School for Deaf Postponed
A decision on Gallaudet University's accreditation has been postponed while an oversight group collects more information about reported problems at the school for the deaf.
The Middle States Commission for Higher Education has concerns about Gallaudet's academic integrity and plans for the future. It is also concerned about a federal report last year that labeled the school as ineffective.
The university will keep its accreditation through the delay.
The commission plans to visit the Northeast Washington campus and is asking for more information. It wants to know about academic rigor, long-term plans, and to be advised of any issues that affect the school.
The campus was mired in protests this fall over the incoming president, who was voted out in October.
Accreditation is a voluntary process, but loss of accreditation signals problems.
