A conference on teaching deaf and hearing impaired children has been told New Zealand is a world leader in the field.
Educators from New Zealand and Australia are meeting in Rotorua to examine the methods used to teach such children.
Dr Mark Marschark, from the United States National Technical Institute for the deaf, says deaf students generally achieve less academically than hearing children. But he says he's impressed by the willingness of New Zealand parents and educators in New Zealand to try new things.
Marschark says because New Zealand is small, there are lots of opportunities to get deaf children and educators together, and share methods.
