A normal life for the deaf-blind
The deaf-blind deserve to play a full part in society on an equal footing with everybody else, so it is important that a well organised network of people exists who are capable of helping the deaf-blind in their day-to-day lives.
These issues will be included on the agenda for the 9th Nordic Conference on Deaf-Blindness, at Hanaholmen in Esbo, Finland, 10-14 September 2008.
The three main themes will be communication, identification and documentation/information. The organisers, the Nordic Staff Training Centre for Deaf-blind Services (NUD), have set a deadline of 14 January 2008 for the call for papers.
Deaf-blindness is when a person has serious sight and hearing problems. In other words, you do not have to be completely blind or totally deaf to be registered as deaf-blind. Communication with the deaf-blind is often by sign language, which the deaf-blind person reads with his or her hands.
NUD's main role is to provide assistance to people and organisations who work with the deaf-blind. NUD, a Nordic Council of Ministers institution, arranges training and courses which complement national activities.
