A hole lot of joy for deaf golfer David - Gazette Live
DEAF golfer David Hugill has the sporting world at his feet.
David, 42, of Alphonsus Street, North Ormesby, is to compete in the World Deaf Golf Championship, representing England, in Perth, Australia, in September.
David, who works for Darlington Borough Council as a community support worker with deaf and blind clients, has played golf since he was 12.
He said: “This is going to be fantastic as I am the first deaf person in the North-east to play in the world championships.
“Being deaf is an advantage at golf as there are no distractions and you can really concentrate on your game.”
David plays off an England Deaf Golf Association handicap of 12.
His partner Nicola Garland said: “I’m very proud of him - he’s a really good player.”
David’s work involves visiting OAP groups and deaf centres and visiting individual clients to offer support.
The Perth championships will be against other top profoundly deaf golfers from around the world.
David is going to Perth, either as one of the team of six or as one of an additional four players.
The six in the team will play in the individuals and team event and the remaining four in the individuals.
He added: “I have provisionally been selected due to my outstanding performance during a competition held in Scotland last August which we won.
“I must also attend the National Deaf Golf Competition, which will be held in May at Crewe, to ensure I have kept the same standard.
“It’s a great honour and exciting opportunity for me as a profoundly deaf person using British Sign Language.”
David needs to raise £3,000 sponsorship to secure his place to cover travel, accommodation and green fee costs.
He will be holding fundraising events of his own, but is open to offers of sponsorship.
He is currently a member and captain of the local Deaf Golf Society known as Tees Deaf Golf Society which has about 30 members who compete monthly on golf courses throughout the Tees Valley.
He said: “I recently captained the society in two friendly matches against other Deaf Golf Societies from Wakefield, the result being very successful as we achieved a double win, 3-1 and 6-0.
