Echorouk Online - 700 deaf –and- dumb new born in Algeria annually.
As it is the case for most of the disabled in Algeria, the deaf community is suffering from disregard and lack of medical assistance, despite the fact that latest technologies made it possible for these individuals to recover their hearing through organ transplant.
But reality in Algeria is bitter and doesn’t seem to cope with the technological breakthroughs. Nothing is done to alleviate the suffering of a large number of children who lost this fundamental sense following accidents at the moment of their birth.
Figures released by the Head of the Otorhinolaryngology Association revealed that 700 children are born with this disability annually. This significant number would be taken into consideration by the authorities and have to intensify their medical assistance towards this community, especially that most of the transplantations are made abroad and with hard currency.
A sunray appeared in the dark horizon to the announcement of the first transplant countrywide at Tlemcen (Western Algeria) Hospital, but this remains out of reach for thousands of sick children who are still living on hope to recover the hearing one day.
On the other hand, the Deaf- and- Dumb National Association secretary-general has recently declared on the sidelines of a seminar held in Oran justice court that it was more than necessary to protect this community and secure their rights by adequate laws.
He further added that the situation of the deaf and mute persons in Algeria is worsening day after day to the lack of skilled personnel and proper tolls to interact with this community and facilitate their daily lives.
