The Statesman
The driver and conductor of a private bus were arrested this morning for throwing off two deaf and dumb men from a speeding bus near Wellington crossing on Lenin Sarani.
The incident occurred at around 11.20 a.m. when Ms Nandini Sengupta, director of a deaf and dumb institute, was travelling with two students of the institute from Taratala to Esplanade. While they tried to get down from the bus near Wellington, the conductor refused to stop the bus. Ms Sengupta had just managed to get down when the bus sped away. Her wards, Babi Mukherjee and Satyabrata were still in the bus. She started running after it when the conductor threw the two out. Both landed on Ms Sengupta, who then hit the pavement. She received several injuries on her face and head and had to be taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. The trio later lodged a complaint with New Market police following which, the driver, Swapan Mandal and Tapan Mandal were arrested.
