BUSHNELL, Fla. -- A central Florida couple was convicted in the death of the woman's toddler, who was strangled in her crib by a pet python.

A Sumter County jury found 21-year-old mother Jaren Hare and her live-in boyfriend, 34-year-old Charles "Jason" Darnell, guilty Thursday of manslaughter, third-degree murder and child neglect. They each face 35 years in prison. Both previously rejected plea agreements for 10 years in prison.

Authorities say an 8-foot-6-inch albino Burmese python wrapped itself around 2-year-old Shianna Hare's head on July 1, 2009. Testimony revealed the snake had not been fed for a month before the attack.

Defense attorneys argued that the death was an accident, and there was no way to know that the tame pet would kill a child.

killer python

OK.. just a couple personal comments on this story, first reptiles belong in their natural habitat. Many grow to be large yet are kept in giant fish tanks or worse an enclosure made by the owner. geez..OK now we add a 2 year old child, OMG, and the keepers of this python, (which are famous for their ability to crush what it attacks and that is part of the allure of having one of these things, the owner get to feed it live mice and watch it stalk and stike the mouse which it swallows head first always). They have a very distinct smell and that would be enough for me right there. But back to the story. So these two adults leave the snake roam free, and make no attempt to keep ot from coming into comtact with the 2 yr old??? (this should make my case that some ppl are just not qualified to be parents.) So the reptile which I'm sure they gave some ominus name..is huge, unfed for weeks OMG again, how irresponsible are these ppl, slithers into the childs area smells a living thing and wraps its 8 ft long body around this childs HEAD! crushing it i'm sure and them proceeds to unlock it's jaw so it can swallow , head first, this dead child. Can you imagine the horror this 2 year old went threw? Please I know you have the right to have a python and a child at the same time, but these ppl allowed this to happen. They knew the snake was out and hungry and there 2 year old was in the house. They belong in prison, they have forfitted their right to be parents again as far as Im concerned. They did everything wrong, do not pass go, go directly to Jail. They set up this scenario. They need to pay the price with their on freedom. I am sick to death of ppl having things like reptiles, rare birds, anything that simply are taken out of its natural habitat for what? So some simple minded fool can watch it eat bigger and bigger prey. I wonder if are haunted by the thought of what happened to that child? I hope so....Midnight..God Bless the Innocent..♥♥♥

ok I own reptiles and snakes but COMMON, these people neglected to follow even the most basic care and prevention.

you should feed weekly, keep snakes and kids away from each other, feed frozen pre-killed animals for health reasons and to dull the hunting instinct a little, have a tight secure large enclosure that is made specifically for that kind of animal (keep the animal in it) and if you have kids, for the love of all things decent don't keep things that can eat them.

snakes cannot be tame, they just calm down cause you give them easy sources of food.

These people were fail snake owner and even more fail at parenting! They give others a bad name.

edit: there are more rules for care and prevention but I'm too lazy to type them all out here.
