How did you become deaf / hard of hearing?

I was born 4 months early (only 6 months in the womb) so a premature birth. My mother had my 2 sisters and I via emergency C-section. My sisters died within 3 weeks after we were born. My hearing loss is from being premature.

Does deafness get better as one gets older??

“Deafness gets better”, maybe it is more about the people you have in your life as time goes by. That those people understand what you need them to do so you guys can communicate effectively. But then, again it was a hearing person that that statement came from. I’m not trying to be mean toward...

Staying relaxed in noisy environments being hoh or deaf. .

Yes, I have an FM system of my own. The schools I went to did not have funding for me. However, in Australia, we have an organisation called Australian Hearing which is where I received funding for majority of things to do with my hearing loss. I have had other people use my FM, my friends...

    Kind of disappointed

I agree with Lysander about someones personal bias coming through. There are no such policies that prevent individuals who deaf or HOH who enrolling in a university. To do so, might be a violation of the Disability act.

    Kind of disappointed

I do not see why you would be denied the chance to be able to do physiotherapy. Is there a disability unit in the university? I have found that as long as you have strategies in place to manage your hearing loss, you will be fine.

Any young peps to get to know?

Hey, I'm 20. HOH since birth, hearing aids are a package deal with me (you're out if you're going to be mean about it). "You're definitely not alone", Elphabaenvy is right. Also you had the courage to reach out to others on this forum, :)

I'm with you on your first example; when people say it doesn't matter when you ask them to repeat things. Happens nearly everyday with my family therefore it is very easy for frustration to build up. I had a teacher infer that I wouldn't amount to much and that my younger siblings were smarter...

    Person Below Me

Yes, especially with people putting their shoes on the table or kitchen bench. I believe it is bad luck to have your shoes on the table. Additionally, the something blue, something old, something borrowed and something new to wear on your wedding day. And I am a tad intimidated by the number...

    Person Below Me

Neither, though I don't know how as I have a bad habit of getting engrossed in a book without any regard to the lighting. Been scolded plenty of times for reading in low lighting However, somehow still have 20/20 vision (when if I think about, I really should not..). TPBM: Have you ever...
