CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

If you find it easier to sign than to strain your brain trying to understand what people are saying, then it makes sense. I still haven't started learning signing yet, but my wife is pushing me to. My APD is our biggest relationship issue (most peoples are money related). I wish I could just...

I am blind, raised by deaf parents

I used to. I live in the cotswolds, now. I'm just about to learn BSL, which I'm excited about. There'll be less communication issues in my household from here on in :D BBT has now had its new Braille Display go into production en masse, which is amazing. Expect to see a display that's one...

    Coping with audio processing

I do this, too, but I'm usually wrong :D I have to explain this everytime to my wife when the kids are arguing in the back seat of the car and I'm driving. If they make too much noise, it affects my vision which is dangerous. I usually see spots and I lose focus. However, having the radio...

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

What TV work have you done? I've completed several projects with the BBC, as well as Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and a number of animation companies. Currently, I'm CTO for a streaming media company. We do Cloud based systems. I change roles quite frequently from animator to hard core...

    Curious about.. Aspys/Aspergers

I suspect I have aspergers syndrome. My CAPD is a direct correlation to it. Essentially, I feel as other people do (I actually have quite intense emotions), but I find them hard to express and I don't really see other peoples emotions. I kinda have to be told when someone is upset of angry...

    Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

ASL is simply a form of communication. I'd liken this to visiting France. When there, if you speak in English all the time and don't attempt to communicate in French, that is annoying. If you try to make contact on their terms, regardless of how poorly, it's more easily forgiven and accepted.

    Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

My wife used the "never mind" tactic again, last night. It followed her being angry that I hadn't heard what she had said. When I pressed her about it, she said "it doesn't matter, now. If I hadn't brought it up, you'd not have known I had said anything". We then had a minor argument about me...

    Cure for CAPD?

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking. It just seemed tempting to hear that someone was having positive results with it and I wanted those, too. Thanks for the honest reply :)

CAPD terminology (Audi says I'm "hearing impaired.")

I didn't really start talking until I was about 4. My sister used to speak for me. Growing up, I was always quite solitary. I was a timid little thing who oddly talked non-stop, but never listened well. I was labelled "easily distracted", but that is usually because, a couple of sentences...

ASL Students: Be honest, your reason???

I have CAPD and will soon be learning BSL (British Sign Language) so as to improve communication with my wife and children... Actually, I don't need to sign at all. They do. I just need to be able to interpret it :)

    Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

Wow, that whole salesman issue sucks. It's amazing how stupid the general populous is about such things, though the worst part is simply not being polite about the whole thing. Ignorance is so much more tolerable when offered with an apology and general kindness :-)

    Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

My wife says "Never mind" and won't repeat and she says "You don't listen". She understands the symptoms of my issue very well, but she doesn't **understand** my issue, if you get my meaning. I love her to pieces, and I know she'd rather have my hearing issue than her blindness anyday of the...

I am blind, raised by deaf parents

Oh, also, I'm helping out with the Bristol Braille Technology Group. We're building the first budget Braille display. As you know, Braille displays normally cost around £1500 / $2500 for the cheapest one. We're building one that should cost around £150 / $200, all being well. Thought you...

I am blind, raised by deaf parents

Hi Pony, You're just the person I need to speak to :-) I have CAPD, which is where my ears work fine, but my brain doesn't hear / process the sounds. My wife is blind. She was born with Glaucoma. We've talked about both of us learning sign for some years. However, we aren't sure how it...

am I the only one? NO BASHING!!

It's possibly due to sensory overload. My wife is registered blind and, about 5 years ago, had a new lens inserted with a prescription shape to replace one removed (cateract). She saw more than she could ever remember (which was still less than 99% of people), and found all the new information...

    Coping with audio processing

That's an interesting way of putting it. Do you sometimes get a sensation like you're being dive bombed by sound? Kinda like the noises each come closer and then far away in succession as though you were being boxed by them in a ring? Sorry, I've no other way to describe it.

    Coping with audio processing

There are some tonal hearing related tests on this site. With these, I get really high results; 95% for visual sound recognition, 91.7% for tonal memory, 0.4125hz in the adaptive test. Those are really good, but they're music related, which apparently works from the opposite side of the brain...

Using ASL to help with CAPD

I've had CAPD since day zero. However, I've only known I have it for a couple of years. Before that, I was always the kid at school who "was easily distracted", the guy who's "away with the fairies" or the husband who "doesn't listen". CAPD really affects my relationship more than anything...
