What effects your CI (Objects, locations, gadgets, etc...)

Umm, interesting! Having my CI for nearly 5 years, I have yet to experience any electronic "noise" with it. I suppose if I set my CI to use telecoil, I would hear it somewhere. Fortunately for me, I never have to use that mode. I have had some of that with my HAs in the past.

    Weird feeling

It's not just you. I know exactly what you mean. It is hard to describe. For me, it is almost as if I'm experience hearing noises with an intensity being a bit louder than normal. It is not so loud as to be uncomfortable but you are "aware" all the same. At the same time, my head feels...

How to Decide on Cochlear Implant Surgery for Children

Yep, it gets old...very old. Hobson's choice...

Med EL or new Nucleus 5?

A side note... Beyond reading the material on both devices, there is no easy solution to determining the best for a person. It isn't like one can "try it on and see". Worst yet even if one had one or the other, one still can't compare the two! The only people who can tell you are the...

Stem cell available in Kansas City

If it is any consolation... I received my CI at 47 and it ain't so bad. I generally forget I have it on and usually I don't get my head stuck to the refrigerator. :D

    Nucleus 5 and Water???

You misunderstood me. I quite well understand the N5 CI is not capable of being used in a shower or a pool. This is regardless of the info that Cochlear has hyped. I meant the motivation of the idea using a CI in water. I couldn't understand why one needed to use a CI in a shower. I could...

    Nucleus 5 and Water???

Ummm, that would be my question as well. Not sure what the benefit would be. If we are talking about when swimming in the pool and being with others, well that is a totally different thing. In any case electronics unless totally sealed, doesn't mix with water period.

How to Decide on Cochlear Implant Surgery for Children

I heard that it was starting to be covered. I'm glad to hear your son got his second one. While having a 2nd CI is really nice, it doesn't negate the fact it is a luxury. Just be aware that nothing is cast in stone given all the uncertainty with health insurance coverage. I don't believe...

Any word on Nucleus 5 rechargable batteries in USA yet?

Nary a word. The FDA moves at its own pace. It will come and I would guess you will have the option to get one as part of your package when they are available.

Stem cell available in Kansas City

Er...the best users are generally children who get a CI while very young. It has to do with the brain acquiring language skills at the same time while doing its own mapping to best use a CI. In other words, the brain is still in development mode for language acquisition. This assumes the...

    Improving Speech (Not born deaf)

If you have heard in the past and had normal speech development, then you will most likely do well once you hear yourself again. Speech is a feedback loop that requires decent hearing to keep it "sharp". Your brain hasn't forgotten any of that but is somewhat "rusty". My speech started...

How to Decide on Cochlear Implant Surgery for Children

Just curious, where do you get those figures from? I've not seen nor heard that anywhere. Going bilateral is never the same in terms of impact compared to getting the one first CI. The biggest impact is better speech discrimination especially with background noise. The sound...

I disagree with this CI surgeon predicting stem cells in 15 years

 Seems there are not enough dead horses to beat on this subject. Must be horse #531 and counting...

Another CI failure story. No improvement in speech!

Tut, tut shame on you! Have you not seen the wonders of technology?!? I'd wager a fig they will do so and soon enough at that. ;)

How to Decide on Cochlear Implant Surgery for Children

The main reason why bilaterals are generally considered a "luxury"... There is a cost associated with everything. Since most CIs are funded via societal efforts (i.e., insurance, gov't funding, private foundations and etc.), it becomes an issue in how best provide maximum "benefits" to the...

Another CI failure story. No improvement in speech!

A couple of things to consider about upgrading the implant... 1) The cochlea is a fragile organ. It is not made for repeated insertions of implant electrodes. 2) There is no guarantee that the new one will work as well as the old one. 3) Insurance coverage will be very...

Another CI failure story. No improvement in speech!

Er...that is not what the poster was claiming. The claim was that all implants eventually give out. That is what I was having issues with as a statement. I totally agree with you that one can't assume that implants would never fail or as you say "no guarantees" that it would be 100% failure...

    Nucleus 5 brochure

That may be true but it would not be enough to justify the price tag even with a trade-in. I would only do it (trade up) if there is a significant improvement not a slight improvement.
