    Between the following 3 cochlears...

No worries on that score. I'm quite aware of that aspect. Also, I know they won't let me go overboard either. :D Yeah, I realized that about the volume control but fundamentally it goes back to the actually mapping of the C levels as a baseline. Get them where they need to be in terms of...

When do you put on your aid(s)/implant(s)?

I have no idea why skydiving is a problem. Having a CI shouldn't stop one from doing it. Scuba diving is another story. It is mostly about the depth one goes and I think that limit is about 80ft deep. The problem is the pressure on the skull and the transmitter laying under the skin. Also...

When do you put on your aid(s)/implant(s)?

I had mine for over five years. I don't even think about it anymore. No big deal in my book. I'm just thankful that I can hear so well these days. I can think of worst things...

Does Being Deaf Affect Your Health Insurance Costs?

Er...what do you mean by being a registered disability? You are right, it might be a moot point with HC.

    Between the following 3 cochlears...

If you are referring to dynamic range, theoretically it can be infinite. Obviously, the brain isn't built for that. No matter which company one chooses, one will never reach as high as those with hearing. Right now, I'm at 50db (with the Freedom) and I know that they have a patient that is at...

ABI... pls help me decide. im very confused

Ahh! I misunderstood you. Sorry. I thought you trying to decide which "device" you would choose for yourself. Obviously, you appear to be a candidate for a ABI not a CI. Ummm, I can't really tell you much about them either personally or from others. I read about a lady who got one...

    Survey for cochlear implant users

As the others have stated, very few with CIs can use the phone on a regular basis. I ought to know as I'm one of the few. I attended a CI seminar in January of 2008. They asked who could use a phone pretty well and only 3 out of 50 of us raised our hands. That somewhat surprised me as I...

ABI... pls help me decide. im very confused

Yes, I heard of them. They are for a select group of people. Very few people have those. As far as I know they are still considered experimental at this point. People who get one typically have a certain kind of tumor (benign) that grows on the Cochlear Nerve. The biggest problem of ABIs is...

    Between the following 3 cochlears...

This might be of interest to you... My audiologist recently mentioned that a patient (who I have met before) decided to go bilateral. When he did his CI the first time around, he chose Med-El. The second time around he chose Cochlear. Of the two, he said that Cochlear was better for...

When do you put on your aid(s)/implant(s)?

I put mine on right after my shower. On workdays, I will turn it on when my family comes downstairs. After dropping off my son at school, I will turn it off until I get settled at work. At that point, I turn it on and leave it on until about 9:30 after my family goes to bed. On weekends, I...

If you would say that listening to music is one of your hobbies or interests...

Most of the time, I just wear headphones over my CI. I'll use them for my MP3 player, the laptop at work and mine at home. Sometimes, I will just listen to internet radio of the desktop and turn the volume up (not that loud) without the headphones.

    Implant Users

There are very few folks with any significant hearing loss can say they fit 100% in the hearing world. By this I mean missing very little. For the few that do or say they can, even they know they have limits. It seems to always come down to the haves and have nots. Class envy is ugly no...

    What do you carry daily

I just carry spare batteries. I have a cell phone but I use that for actually talking with others (I don't text).

    CI controversy

There is some truth to this but it is too general a statement. For somebody like myself, your statement is spot on! I had a HA and now have a CI. I never heard as the hearing do but I much prefer to hear sounds and use spoken language. There is no way in "heck" would I ever want to go...

    Analytic thinker

To follow up with this thought... They do make the "wire" from the electrode to the receiver implant on skull with some slack. This is to accommodate the growth of the skull. Fortunately, infants have heads about 1/3 of their size fully grown. Thus, it is not a big deal.

Does Being Deaf Affect Your Health Insurance Costs?

Hearing or not has no bearing as far as health insurance goes. However, they generally don't cover HAs and accessories. They will cover CIs for those getting one (assumes one qualifies).

    Doctors againsts ASL

People are people the world over regardless being hearing or deaf or otherwise. Everybody has an agenda period. Since the majority of the world is hearing (probably 97% or more in the scheme of things), it puts the DEAF in the untenable position trying to claim being deaf is normal. It is not...

    Doctors againsts ASL

How so? I didn't categorically state that everybody's cup is half empty. I thought I made it clear that it is a 50-50 proposition. Yeah, I can see what you mean though...it depends on who you are talking about ;)

    $70k for CIs!

It all comes down to the most bang for your buck. If it is demonstratively better in kids than adults, then that is where the money will be spent. The adults will then have to have a compelling case to get a second one. I'm probably one of those that would do very well with a second one but...
