Always the elephant in the room...

It's not my place to say what to do, Blondon704, but I can share with you that in my own situation, 20/20 hindsight, my life would've been BEST learning both ASL and spoken language. I hear just enough sound to get away with spoken language in well-lit quiet environments, but it has been...

Always the elephant in the room...

Oh yes, the patronizing "stop feeling sorry for yourself" mantra. Usually said by the very people who are unwittingly stacking the obstacles higher and higher right in front of you. Because you can't just abracadabra self-pity into happiness, you learn to suppress it and ignore your true...

Welcome! And you're welcome - I'm glad this thread has been helpful for you. :) (hey all, I finally figured out how to set the avatar - meet my springer!)

You are on point, it really feels like the burden is on us sometimes to reinvent the wheel. I wish I had joined AD a long time ago. Actually learning from others trials and errors is way easier than using your own life as a big social experiment all the time.

No, no - no apologies needed, I understood you were speaking from a guest standpoint. I was just clarifying that I don't have issues being a guest at big parties.

It's funny because I do not nor will ever complain how someone else's wedding reception is organized, it's their event, their rules. As a guest, I am able to show up, simply seek out familiar acquaintances and try my best at conversation, no problem. And, as a guest, you're free to leave...

Parents of a deaf student plan to sue SAU 16 for not providing an adequate education

Emeryslane's "You people" was kind of a weird warm-fuzzy compliment for me. Having never belonged to a community before - I finally found my peoples! :D

Parents of a deaf student plan to sue SAU 16 for not providing an adequate education

"Hearing impairment" is going the way of "mentally retarded" and "frigid" and "negro", etc etc. Many clinical terms found in government literature has been recognized as politically incorrect and retired over time.

Parents of a deaf student plan to sue SAU 16 for not providing an adequate education

Kids are like sponges, they soak up their family's ideology, spoken or not. Kids soaking up their hearing parents' anti-ASL mentality is not much different than learning racism or sexism. It's usually never an overt message, but it can be felt and seen in many ways. If someone had proposed...

    dancing at the bars.

As a 30-something, I wistfully don't frequent clubs or raves anymore. We had some phenomenal clubs and after hours bars in Detroit, birthplace of the underground techno movement, in the 90s-early 2000s. St. Andrews Hall, Motor Lounge, Space - just to name a few of many many places. The...

My Song | Story of a girl stuck between the hearing and Deaf worlds

Just watched the movie... Jesus Christ! It's been a PITA getting a passing grade in the hearing world, and clearly it's going to be a PITA getting into the Deaf one - why else would this movie have been made if it didn't truthfully portray the reality for us in-between'ers?

Good one! Actually it was more like this: :pissed:

Ever been insulted for being deaf?

My older sister was the worst offender when we were kids. She would hide right behind me and whistle next to my ears, which caused me to fumble with my HAs, thinking they were feedbacking. Once I caught on to her act, she'd run off cackling. And oh, I just loved it when my sister would face...

    Tree cutting problem

Our neighbor's 100 ft dead tree (curse the emerald ash borer) had cracks running up and down the trunk, and was located less than ten feet from their house. He managed to find a trio of insured tree acrobats to shimmy up and down that dead tree, sawing in sections, for $1,500, chipping/grinding...

Does Day Light Saving Really Save Energy??

I definitely prefer more sunlight in the later part of the day. Taking my dog for her 5:30pm walk or grabbing groceries is less fun when it's pitch black outside. Plus it feels unsafe since I use sight to spy any weird people or stray animals on the approach. But the extra hour of sleep on...

Always the elephant in the room...

LOL! Jillio - I spit out my diet coke on your punch-dunking comment, there was indeed a huge bowl of pink punch at the party. Hahah! It's true that MIL put ahead her need of making the whole town feel invited, rather than settling for a smaller affair to make it more inviting to me...

Always the elephant in the room...

That's true, Jazzberry - the big parties will not end/not in my control. I will try a pen/paper, see how that goes down. Just wish it didn't have to come down to that. The noise is horrible! Even with great hearing aids, the crowd noise makes me feel disoriented and dizzy. Well... the...

Hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween weekend! DH and I dressed as Double Dare contestants. Last couple of days, I've thought about this thread, and realized that I've talked so much about my parents/sister because I've been repeating the same ol' draining "suck it up" mentality with my new...

No need to apologize, I understand your message and joining AD is intentionally my first step away from the past and towards a brighter future. Discussing my past with all of you has been cathartic because your empathy and sharing similar stories reinforces that I did not just imagine all of...
