Well here's a suggestion, there's a lot of big companies factories in Bakersfield area such as Fritos and few others. Also there are some oilfield there as well. You may want to look into those.

Well it stopped me from being in the military with like 90% of my high school friends who was in ROTC. Even if the military somehow end up decide to let me in, they will never let me in Special Force. Now do you want to tell me my deafness hasn't stopped me?

Honestly I think it is full of BS and done mainly for marketing purpose. I know many people who attend RIT and it seems like pretty much none of deaf student ever talk to a hearing person. I know at least 5 people and none of them have any hearing friend from RIT.
