How do you develop an accent?

Language is a continuous work in progress, and it is not unusual for people, especially kids, to follow how their peers talk in order to fit in, even if they're not in the initial language acquisition stage (1-6) or secondary language acquisition window (12-15). There might be a few words the...

    Being different (hearing loss only)

hmm.. yeah. Subbing is a dangerous situation because the kids could feel like doing anything. Things are a bit different when they're "your kids" but when you're subbing you have to get on top of them for everything :/ otherwise they think they can walk all over you.

How do you develop an accent?

It may be because your teachers and classmates did not also have that accent. Kids want to fit in, and they are quick to pick up a new accent so they don't "stand out".

They'll take on the speech habits that are the most convenient. In this case, it'll be the Canadian accent.

    Why are zombies/stories so popular?????

I think people just like to know they can fend off savage attacks. But the truth is... humans are pretty defenseless compared to other animals like tigers, bears, wolves..

    It's better to share something...

I survived Y2K, even though doomsdayers were ranting that computers would become sentient and kill us, phone lines would go down, electricity would cease to exist, and that nukes will fire accidentally. In comparison, surviving 12/21/12 should be no sweat.

Gun Expert Lott: Let Teachers Carry Arms, Ban Gun-Free Zones to Halt Mass Shootings

The current policy in most schools right now is to barricade the classroom door and to wait for police rescue. However, there's problems with this: 1. It takes a long time to get a broken door lock fixed, and doors can be broken open 2. Some classrooms do not have a place to hide (older...

Gun Expert Lott: Let Teachers Carry Arms, Ban Gun-Free Zones to Halt Mass Shootings

... don't you think that expecting all professionals to be trained to use guns is a bit of an unnecessary expectation? Professionals are more likely to encounter someone who only speaks Spanish than be in a shoot out. Does this mean they should be required to all be fluent in Spanish too, just...

    Connecticut school massacre

You try to understand how their mind works and reasons to point out the discrepancies between how they think and how things actually are, I suppose. I'm not saying mental health is a foolproof solution. I just wonder if this incident isn't indicative of something overlooked or lacking in society.

    Delurking to introduce myself

I've been exploring different comic ideas, and I thought something involving a strong deaf character would be interesting. I want to work on a comic where a hearing employee gets a job of their dream, and the boss is deaf. Through the eyes of the employee I want to portray how the deaf boss is a...

    Connecticut school massacre

It's too bad he couldn't have been shown better coping methods or better self-awareness techniques so that he could have sought help for his feelings and urges instead of acting out on them. Sometimes our emotions and thoughts are powerful, and we need others to solve them. Just like how if you...

Gun Expert Lott: Let Teachers Carry Arms, Ban Gun-Free Zones to Halt Mass Shootings

Everyone is quick to blame teachers for things that go wrong in schools, because the public's basic understanding of school is that the teacher is a boss. Also teachers are an easy target because there is far fewer teachers than there are the number of parents. I think about this comic whenever...

Gun Expert Lott: Let Teachers Carry Arms, Ban Gun-Free Zones to Halt Mass Shootings

I can't side with this argument either. A teacher's job is to teach, not to be a security guard, bodyguard, or soldier. They're already overburdened as it is throughout the day because they must take on the role of a mother, father, role-model, coach, adviser, analyst, actor, coordinator...

Customers Called 'Fat Girls' on Restaurant Bill

On one hand I think "well what's the big deal? So what if their bill said fat girls?" But what if someone gave me a bill titled "short asian"? If my stature and race is all a business can think about, I probably wouldn't go back to that business.

Gun Expert Lott: Let Teachers Carry Arms, Ban Gun-Free Zones to Halt Mass Shootings

Requiring teachers to carry guns in school is ridiculous. Kids are more likely to get harmed from guns misfiring, from wanting to touch the gun, play with the gun, teacher having no way to secure the gun out of kids' reach in the classroom... etc. The bigger problem with mass shootings is the...

    Archaeology Challenge

Most successfully decoded languages lend thanks to words that are common in that language with a known language, such as names of famous rulers (Alexander the great). It isn't possible to decode this back into what language it's based on without some form of context or linkage to an existing...

    Connecticut school massacre

I think on a very basic definition of terrorism, school shootings do fall under terrorism. Does it strike fear in the hearts of students, their parents and faculty, to the point where they alter their lifestyles to avoid this perceived danger? Then yes, it is a type of terrorism, but as far...
