I thank you as well. We had an easy road to insurance approval for the simultaneous, bilateral cochlear implants, but many others would never win the battle without your help. Good luck to you and all families you help in 2008 and beyond.

Good for you. People from "other" groups never know what to do in this PC world, and it can definitely be uncomfortable. Most people don't mean to be offensive, and by using such terms are often accidentally offensive! For example, where I live it seems that "African-American" is preferred...

I suggest you interview surgeons and their CI teams to see if they are a fit for you, and discover what brands the best teams you find use. From there you can learn more and decide which may be best for you.

It depends on the age at which the child was implanted, their support system, educational resources, and their abilities - among other things.

I'm surprised you seem to feel that someone is suggesting Deaf parents should not have the right to decide against a CI. Maybe I missed a post, but I haven't seen anyone get angry over someone not being implanted.

Kids with CI can play football if their parents so choose. There is a boy in my community that plays on his 8th grade team. I specifically asked our surgeon about this because I played football myself and would like Drew to have that opportunity if he wants to play, and our surgeon's opinion...

Sorry soars, I was kidding. I see anti-CI'ers mention the "fact" that the CI is in the brain, and the "fact" that the person is left with a big hole in their skull after the surgery so that the coil (the part with the magnet on it that sticks to the head) can be "plugged in".

I continuously see references to the fact that "not all benefit", but I rarely if ever see an explanation of why these people are not benefiting. Most of the time, the people who keep reminding us of these failures have never investigated anything about why the CI recipients have not...
