update on my 9.5-week old son - now has HA's

jesse, I met Dr. Papsin last Thursday at a CI seminar here in Columbus. He was a very impressive speaker and seems very empathetic. He represents Sick Kids very well, and it seems that you would be in good hands with him. Good luck to you. If it serves to help you in any way, you can...

That's great to hear, Shel. I hope Jake's family learns about people like your boss.

Preakness Jockey Desormeaux Rides for Deaf Son

After the Kentucky Derby I posted how interesting it was to see that the jockey's son, Jake, had bilateral cochlear implants (Kentucky Derby and Cochlear Implants). After looking into his story, I saw that he also had Usher Syndrome. Well since then I have come across more information about...

Son of Derby Winner Jockey Has Bilateral CI's

Hmm, I don't think Eight Belles would've been able to finish second if there was a pre-race problem. It looked like a mis-step when slowing after the race, and that the fall caused both fractures. For whatever reason, breaking those thin legs is considered a fatal injury in thoroughbreds. I...

Both me and my wife, as well as our daughter are hearing.

Son of Derby Winner Jockey Has Bilateral CI's

Unfortunately, I just found out that Jake has Usher's Syndrome (recently diagnosed). I hope that he experiences minimal effects if at all possible. Here's a link to my post about Big Brown Jockey Kent Desormeaux and his son Jake, which has links to other articles and the NBC Pre-Race Video...

Son of Derby Winner Jockey Has Bilateral CI's

If you watched the Kentucky Derby today you may have noticed Jockey Kent Desormeaux's son Jake with his bilateral Advanced Bionics CI's. Evidently he was born deaf in 1999. Here is an article. Interestingly, his father (the jockey) lost his hearing in his right ear after a racing accident...

I have question for Anyone who have Ci children.

I stay in the CI & Hearing Aid forum because it's the only topic at this site with which I have any experience with, and because I don't have any input on questions such as "What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies?".

I didn't want to say anything but......

Hey, since you're a robot now, I guess it could be hanging off of your back or somewhere weird like that. 'Cause robots are all metal, right?:)

    See, it does happen.

I did in the "trendy" sentence at the end, but forgot in the next sentence. My error.

    See, it does happen.

I agree that having a blog invites discussion on what you post, for both people that share your view and those who disagree.

    See, it does happen.

I don't understand where you get this 'trendy, latest gadget" idea. I believe I can speak for almost everyone with a cochlear implant, and almost any parent of a child when I say that none of them "want" a cochlear implant. Who "wants" to go around with one or two boxes hanging from their...

I didn't want to say anything but......

I was imagining that you were walking all around your place looking for your CI, and then after an hour or so you realized that it was on your ear (like when people who wear glasses can't find them when they're on their head). I hope you find it, but picturing that scenario in my head gave me...

Check out the poem: "The Rectitude of the Deaf Community"

Don't worry, your heart should be bursting with joy with the realization that you'll always be able to frown upon the way that others live, and with a bit of hard work, perhaps you can influence others to join in your frowning efforts. Maybe you can even buy some T-Shirts with a bunch of...

    H/A vs. C/I

Sometimes people's hearing with aids is such that they can "hear" or "perceive" sounds or speech of a certain decibel, but they cannot understand/distinguish the sounds or speech. Because some people feel that understanding auditory speech is important, they may decide in that case that the...

CI doctors and scientists do not care for Deaf culture and ASL?

Looks like this person was dead wrong. It's already 5 years past 10 years having elapsed, and there is no sign of the deaf culture becoming extinct. [Oops, I see litalia and R2D2 said this already.]

    CI Robots?

Actually, no, I would agree. It looks like a robotic ankle. However, I wouldn't call the person (assuming there is more than just legs attached) a robot. Perhaps a cyborg, by definition.
