    Whats your ethnic background?

On the census, I marked "other" and wrote in "American". I lived with two Dutch guys in college for a semester. They got a good laugh that people in the USA can consider themselves Dutch, German, or anything else. So... they don't claim me, so I don't claim them :) USA American!

Kids' test answers on race brings mother to tears

A friend of mine's 5 year old daughter personified rural Iowa's lack of diversity once when she saw a black man in line at the convenience store. "Look mommy, a chocolate man!!", she yelled for everyone to hear.

    She says "Milk"!

We've been bombarding our deaf daughter with simple baby signs since she was born. This week, at 6 months, she very deliberately showed us that what she's drinking is called "milk". Now every time she gets a bottle that little hand starts squeezing away. Let me tell you, there's a whole...

    decisions

Thats why we let candidacy be handed down from MDs, PhDs, and AuDs. :) But everyone's opinion is appreciated. On a slightly off topic note, my daughter started signing "milk". There's a whole lot of happy around here for a little tiny squeezing hand.

    decisions

Thanks for the replies. The decisions have seemingly obvious answers, but I thought I would lay them out here for discussion. AB vs Cochlear doesn't have an obvious answer, and I'm glad we're still 6 mos + from implantation because I'd change my mind daily. But, you can't go wrong either way...

    decisions

We had our daughter's first visit with the CI team. They did behavioral testing and it matched her ABR with no response across the board. From an audiology standpoint, she's a candidate for implants. Next comes the medical testing. Quite a few decisions to be made. 1. To implant or not...

Gun owners: how many rounds should we have?

I've picked up quite a bit of ammo from AIM Surplus Home lately. They had an unbelievable deal on .45 auto last month, and they had 50 round boxes of 9mm for $9.00 when everyone else either couldn't get it or was selling it for $1 per round. Their stock seems to vary daily- I picked up 5 boxes...

Parents may not understand or recall risks associated with children's surgery

Just remember that at the heart of this thread is an article that has nothing to do with the risk factors behind surgery, but the effectiveness of communication between parents and physicians. We might get some different/additional perspectives if we floated these responses under a heading...

Parents may not understand or recall risks associated with children's surgery

It extends beyond surgery as well. Medication side effects, non surgical procedure risks, riding rides at amusement parks, eating sushi, hot coffee at McDonalds, etc, etc. When the general public is bombarded with risk warnings all day long, they lose their edge.

Parents may not understand or recall risks associated with children's surgery

This SMALL study seems to be aimed at the "informed consent" delivery by medical personnel. Conclusions about the parent's carelessness or the magnitude of any risk factors really can't be drawn from it.

    flying after implantation?

I would have questioned it too due to the restriction on diving because of pressure.

    got the hearing aids today

good discussion! You guys are better teachers than you know, even with the multiple opinions. I didn't even know some of this stuff existed. We go in for MRI/CT in mid April to try to determine the cause of my daughter's hearing deficit. The CI candidacy assessment is the same day. Open...

Proposal for Audism policy to be placed in the guidelines

I'm glad someone directed my attention this way- I've learned a lot from this thread, despite the feeling of ambiguity present in posts about the subject matter. I didn't even know this Audism principle existed. My eyes have been opened. Thank you. Reminds me a little bit of when I spent...

Proposal for Audism policy to be placed in the guidelines

I've made no decisions. I'm not anti-ASL. I know sign is going to be #1. We bought a sign dictionary and are trying our best to make every possible sign as we interact with our daughter. I have alot of feelers out looking for ASL teaching sources, in fact we met with one teacher last week...

Proposal for Audism policy to be placed in the guidelines

Someone tipped me off that you all were talking about me. Look, I've never really knowingly met a Deaf person. I don't know what Audism is. I don't know if it's taboo to have said the following in a post: "There aren't many resources in this area. Our hospital has an ASL interpreter on...

Bear with me, a little rant. I won't do it often, I promise.

I know they mean well, but I wish people would keep to themselves if they don't know what they're talking about. That or say, "I think that", or "hey, you know maybe", instead of acting like what they say is undisputed truth. My baby daughter had no response on sedated ABR, but people hear...

    Residual Hearing

Would make for a difficult decision for us if it comes to it. 4 month old daughter with 90+ loss on first ABR.

    got the hearing aids today

We finally got scheduled for an Early Access visit in two weeks! Also, the area school system is sending someone out to talk on the same day. I'm pretty excited to see what is available for our daughter in the area. We're kind of in the middle of nowhere 120 miles from Des Moines, and 80...

    got the hearing aids today

Spoke with the audiologist today. They said that the aids are maxed out and will have alot of feedback- especially since she's still learning to hold her head up. Today they haven't been as loud... so it was probably a combo of not having them in properly and her resting her head against...
