    Wow, CI's are expensive

Charges submitted to our insurance were just shy of 150k for bilateral implants and the workup. Although bills keep coming in.

A Violation of Human Rights Re: Forcing A Deaf Child to Wear CI

I think you could make a human rights claim about denying a child a CI as well-- that's the opposing extreme here. Good parenting is to research the options, and make the decision that you decide is right. Personally, we decided to implant and to use signed English along with the verbal...

    Enough is Enough...

Nah, I don't think I had any fantasies about my in-utero daughter. Almost to the other extreme- I couldn't wait for her to be born and get a year on her so I could see what kind of person she was going to be. Turns out, a deaf person. I remember they sat us down after the second ABR in a room...

    Enough is Enough...

Hmm. I had no expectations and am glad to have my child as she is, profoundly deaf. One of the larger problems was confronting a grieving extended family and friends- and convincing them there is nothing to grieve. My child will be a happy, normal kid, but she'll communicate a little...

    CI progress

Two months of CI use has shown great change and progress for our 15 month old daughter. She answers to her name, knows "no", dances when she hears music, and has started trying to respond vocally by repeating sounds we say to her. She brings us the CIs in the morning or points to them on...

new here, the name's taylorjade :)

hello My 14 month old daughter is 3 weeks post activation of her bilateral cochlear implants. Would be interested in hearing about your first year's experiences. :) We hit sign language very hard and were lucky to start receiving signs back when she was 6 months. She continues to be a very...

    Another recall for AB

Actually the recall notice stated that the problem addressed by this recall would occur within the first 90 days of use if it was going to happen. Our daughter loves activating toys that play music now. And she goes to the door looking for the dogs if they bark. Plus she's really become...

    Another recall for AB

Unofficial AB news is that aside from the first two patients with issues, of the other 9, four have been shown to be not having the problems associated with this recall. No word on the other 5. Also interesting to me, the first two instances were separated by at least a year. Our daughter...

    CC and Plasma TV's?

We just got a plasma on Black Friday. It will probably be outdated and moved to the basement by the time my daughter can read, but I thought I'd ask.

Is your car a cop magnet?

10 years without a ticket, then two within two weeks when I bought a red Cadillac STS. I was SO careful with my new ride, I don't think I had changed my driving habits, or if I had, made them more cautious. I'd call the red Caddy a cop magnet.

What do you have that is running for past two decades?

Two 1930's F-20 tractors, a 1970's lo-boy tractor, a 1965 John Deere lawn mower, a 1951 Ford Custom Deluxe Car, and a bunch of WWI and II rifles that still shoot really well.

    baby sign language question

Our daughter started signing early on, but it took us a while to notice. Our good formed "milk sign" was first returned as scratching her chest, and mom was a fist brought up near the face. Since then she has developed better form... but often gives incorrect signs. She sometimes signs milk...

    Still around

Dropping back in for an update. We implanted bilateral AB implants in Oct. Activation was Nov 24. We could not be more pleased with the results- responses are very clear at this point. We've hit the SEE hard and continue to take classes. My daughter has an extensive sign vocabulary (for a...

Baby's reactions to their with cochlear implant

Would be kind of cool if there were a chat function on here. Or if we could private message. I'd really like to network with other parents or CI users, or anybody else on here for that matter. The lack of chat/PM really holds a person back from the socializing. What is CI circle? I wonder...

Baby's reactions to their with cochlear implant

Waiting would limit the potential benefits. We've decided to implant early, bilateral, full array, to use ASL, and to not look back. She's 8 months old. The only reason I would wait until 12 months is because we wanted a third ABR under sedation. Otherwise the surgeon said we could do it now.

    Living in a dorm help

I loved the dorms in college. You'll want a pail or basket for bathroom items, and I always wore a pair of rubber beach shoes in the communal shower. I always had a microwave or toaster oven, and if I didn't have easy access to free ice and a cooler, I had a micro fridge for leftovers and...
