    Pocket Knives & Teenagers......

I always carried a knife from 6th grade on. Not a big threatening one, but a little tiny one blade. Knives are very handy tools- I remember teachers and principals asking to borrow it quite a few times. I guess nobody thought it was a big deal. Guns weren't a big deal either, I remember my...

    Spent the week at Moog

Keep in mind that they're all independent. The only "real" Moog school is in St. Louis, the other schools have purchased their curriculum. This was emphasized during the workshop.

    Spent the week at Moog

It has taken a month or so to sort through all the information. We weren't prepared for the workshop to be a week long advertisement for their school, and it kind of messed with our heads. We're moving forward with the good stuff we've gleaned from our trip.

    Nucleus 5 and Water???

Hurry up with the Neptune already! I hope to spend some hearing time next summer with my daughter in the field, garden, and pool! I would think that Cochlear would be coming out with something similar soon after. I think the reps take a lot of liberty with the N5 water advertisements, and...

    which is better?

Ask your AEA to hook you up with some families of kids with CI's. We saw kids who only had awareness of sound (due to poor auditory rehab post CI), and kids who were at or near the level of their hearing peers. Your AEA should be able to point you towards a group meeting of AG Bell, or a...

    any advice would be wonderful!

Nah, it's all good. Sounds like this little tyke has 3 months of hearing aids and a few other thing to sort out before it's CI decision time. Hopefully the data isn't conflicting or ambiguous. I see passive decisions quite a bit in my line of work and sometimes its the right thing to call...

    any advice would be wonderful!

We were in this same situation with our daughter. When she failed the aid trial, we had the same feelings- at first. For us, the "CI referral" meant about a year's worth of testing before they would even ask us to set a surgery date, so we opted to proceed with the testing and research the...

    Waterproof hearing aids

Ease the main sheet and throw in a reef! 10 years of sailing and I've never capsized- yet. Thankfully a mac25 is very forgiving and fairly idiot proof! Good luck with your search for waterproof aids. Capsizing, spray, and rogue waves would be tough to deal with.

Help with an infant that keeps failing his hearing test

To address your questions...You'll probably be sent for a battery of tests. Our girl received additional OAE tests, and ABRs. When we found out her loss was most likely severe enough to benefit from a cochlear implant, we started a year's worth of testing towards that potential outcome...

    home day care to center

We're moving our 19 month old CI using daughter from a home day care setting to a center setting that is structured a little more like a pre-school. Neither the home nor center is specifically set up for deaf kids, CI or not. She was able to advance her hearing and speech in the more quiet...

    New Neptune CI processor- Swimming?

The water thing I thought was kind of cool. Not just for swimming, but accidental drops, peace of mind while fishing or boating, etc. Also I want my daughter to be able to hear the life guard whistle, and have continuity communicating with her friends in the pool or doing anything else where...

How long do your CI batteries last

My daughter's harmony processors last all day (waking hours) and three or four hours into the next when using the standard rechargeable power cells, and about 10 hours if using the rechargeable compacts. Its kind of cool that they both go dead within a minute of each other when they do go dead.

    Cochlear Implant myths?

Studies have not linked cochlear implants with an increased risk of VIRAL meningitis, but rather bacterial meningitis, associated with acute otitis media. The increased risk is considered small, and greatly reduced by an effective vaccine.
