    Cochlear Implants?

I am not deaf either, but a mother of a deaf toddler who isn't able to make choices for herself yet and these are my opinions. I hope to not offend anyone =x Simple answer: No. From my understanding the majority of Deaf are born to hearing parents, and yes, unfortunately many of them seem to...

    1 Sign or Word - what's yours?

Think Pokemon, but instead of saying your name, you can only repeat ANY 1 sign or word for the rest of forever. What would yours be? As a mother of 2 very young children, my sign would probably be 'knock it off' :hmm: If all Zoe could ever sign or say in her life was 1 word it would most...

Anyone with 1 CI and 1 Ha?

Thanks! Glad to hear you both like/d your ci/ha combo, that defintely eases the worry of it not being 'the right thing to do' by Zoe.. The hospital that we go to is excellent, so surely they won't steer me wrong. I've still got a good couple of months left to obsess over it anyhow haha. Lots of...

Anyone with 1 CI and 1 Ha?

Hi everyone! I have a pretty simple question for anyone who has any thoughts on it. Up until recently I have been told given Zoe's audiogram that she will most likely need 2 CIs. I have been planning on 2 CIs. I have read that 2 CIs are better than 1. Now with her Phonak Naidas in they say we...

    Weather Report

@Bottesini - That's too much excitement for one night! Hope no more tree mishaps for you! Southern IL/St Louis have been so freaking windy with some flurry snow, but doesn't seem like anything is sticking yet. Fingers crossed it doesn't, can't stand to drive in the stuff!

    Pics of Zoe's 1st HAs

Yeah, the hospital has been talking about CIs. It looks like she is getting such great benefit from her HAs that they may only suggest 1 CI :D Plan on doing 'total communication' with her :)

    Pics of Zoe's 1st HAs

Hi there! We finally got my daughter's (she's 16mths) first pair of hearing aids today! These are Phonak Naidas, turned to the highest volume (loners) :) She seems to really like them, in fact, she had her MRI today also and when she woke up she was poking at her ears to see if they were there.

    Keeping HAs on Toddlers?

Any ideas or suggestions on how to keep hearing aids on a 1 year old? She's 16 months old with severe to profound hearing loss, with the greater hearing loss in high frequencies. They are giving her the strongest hearing aids on the market they said (can't remember the brand?) on Thursday, but...

    success/failure stats?

Looks like it's still in it's trial period here in the us and pending FDA approval. I did a quick search and found a small number of universities offering trials for the product, but the ones I checked on say people must be 18 or older and I suspect they will probably be approved for adults...

    Deciding on Brand

Oh, forgot to say we had another audiologist apt the 13th and they did another behavioral hearing test (I was wrong on the abr, they only tested up to 100db with no response) and it did turn out that she has about 80db loss in the low tones and 90+db loss in the high frequencies. So she does...

    Deciding on Brand

Well we just canceled her CT scan in Jan and made an apt for an MRI this coming Thurs at SLCH (we were going to Cardinal Glennen before) and I was told after this the dr may have a recommendation. I'm kind of hoping he recommends AB though, I think the water proof in up to 6 feet of water is...

    Deciding on Brand

Great posts, thank you! The great news for us is that the closest hospital that does the surgeries happens to be one of the top 10 hospitals for children getting Cochlear Implants - St Louis Children's Hospital. I'm fairly certain all of their surgeons are highly skilled at placing all 3...

    Deciding on Brand

Not trying to start brand war by any means! I am simply trying to gather more and more information in order to choose which CI to get my 16 month old daughter after she finishes the evaluation. She's only just getting fitted for her HAs but her audiogram showed no hearing at 128db, so we're...

    Toddler with hearing loss

About the low facial/muscle tone, I agree it could make it harder for her to enunciate clearly. Her specialist from ISD did say to me the other day that she doesn't really believe Zoe was born deaf because of all the different sounds and pitches she uses still. I don't really know what to make...

    Toddler with hearing loss

Our EI program is most definitely very oral-oriented, which has been annoying to say the least. Every time I bring up how we want to learn ASL more thoroughly they tell me how she probably won't even "need" it. I let them know that I don't care how much she "needs" it when she has her CIs on...
