    Cochlear Nucleus Freedom user...an intro!

Hi Bill welcome to AD!! I can relate to you on a couple things. From just waking up to complete silence and the roaring tinnitus, to putting school aside for persona reasons. However, we went bionic it is behind us but never far from us. Reading your mini biography was very refreshing and I am...

    N00b Questions about CIs

I wouldn't think so because the implant inserted underneath the skin is grounded. There is more metal in a cowboy boot then what is under the skin. The CI processor that we wear is like a hearing aid and should be no more at risk of getting zapped then wearing a hearing aid. I have no...

    Alldeaf's very own spider thread

Great... :eek3: next time I take a trip to the spider petting zoo, I will make a point to try to hear the spider walk. *shudder* I don't think I want to visit Australia as much as I use too now LOL!! :eek3:

10 Things I learned from my CIs

    1. I've learned to cover my ear when leaning over a water fountain. 2. I've learned to maintain upright posture when washing my hands. 3. I've learned to utter sentences that I never dreamed I would say like "I forgot to put my ear back on" or "Hello, I'm Abbie, I'm the bionic friend."...

Sooo confused about whether or not to get a CI

I agree with R2D2 too! No matter how many hearing aids I've tried, the feedback has always proven unreconcilable. What was really annoying was that something as simple as my hair would cause feedback. So I sacrifices volume for the lack of whistling.

Sooo confused about whether or not to get a CI

I currently wear a CI in my left ear which has been useless to me for 15 years and a BTE in my right ear. According to my latest tests results, my CI has surpassed my right ear which was my good ear. It works for me but I have heard of some cases of where the CI's clarity interferes with the...

    Activation!!

My fourth mapping went well! I'm digging the music program over my base program (my everyday program). I love the wider dynamic range and voices sound pretty. Voices stand out for me in the car regardless of road noise and music. In the beginning, my Audi stuck me in the booth did a tone...

10 Things I learned from my CIs

I'm putting my creative cap on here to devise up a list. I'm still a newbie here!! :) It still has that new CI smell.

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

That is okay. I am just going by what other people have said going through CI evaluations and my own personal experience. It was drilled in my head actually. (no pun intended) However, I should point out that the key word is "could." Just like a pace maker for a patient that has a irregular...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

It must be very, very rare for someone not to hear something at activation if they have a working auditory nerve and a working implant. I haven't heard of one case upon activation they did not hear something because the implant failed or the auditory nerve is dead. Something being any kind of...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

There are tests done to make sure that there is a working auditory nerve prior to the surgery. At the time of surgery, the implant is turned on and tests are conducted to make sure it is inserted properly and functioning before they even close you up. They do tell you to keep your...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

Politically, the red tape set by strict FDA guidelines. That is what prevents some from skipping over HA's and going right for the CI. As a part of the evaluation, they need to conduct speech discrimination test in the best aided conditions of both ears, not just one. If you are over the...

    Highlands's CI journey

Since I have worn hearing aids all my life, adjusting to the speech processor was not a big deal. They are considerably bigger then my hearing aid but once I got use to it, it was no big deal. I had to relearn how to hug people to avoid knocking it off. The same way with hearing aids, you...

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

I see what your saying. I don't feel that it is a argumentative topic at all. I feel that Fuzzy is asking that those who are in the profoundly deaf category what prevents most from getting a CI. There could be several factors, like culture, language, length of loss and motivation. It takes...

    sleep and ha's

I've never worn my hearing aid sleeping unless I fell asleep accidentally which rarely happens. Like everyone else says, the ears need to breathe. It cost more in batteries. I use to get headaches a lot but not anymore. No one has every contributed them to my ears, it always been stress.

Aren't we wasting time with HAs...

I'm going to be my own example. I settled for a hearing aid because I was happy with what I was hearing. Once an integral part of my lifestyle disappeared and I was not going to let it go without a fight. That is when I really considered it, because there was no other choice for me with the...

    Activation!!

Fuzzy dear, I can say that I wish I got my left ear done a long time ago since I would have lost nothing having it done but if I made that decision back then, the technology would have been different and perhaps I wouldn't have appreciated it as much as I do now. It is a catch 22. It would...

R2D2, I heard birds yesterday! From the sounds of the, I heard three different ones. I was waiting outside and playing with my dog and I heard squawks, I stopped and I was like I'll be damned, birds. We don't get many cockatoos around here. The only cockatoos I see are in cages. We have...

    Highlands's CI journey

Highlands, I am glad you are taking your time with this. When I was researching I wanted a clinic, surgeon and my audiologist to be familiar with all three brands. I didn't want to feel like I was going to buy a car and had to go to a specific place that only sold the cars I was interested...
