    Mixed hearing/deaf at restaurants

I am HOH and in most situations, I am the one having difficulties hearing in restaurants. But I still order for myself and of course, I still use my voice. I began losing my hearing later in life, in my 40s, so I use all my communication tools: my aids and my voice and my eyes. If I can't...

for oral people: When your HA/CI battery runs out

I am HOH, not Deaf at this point. However, I always change my hearing aid batteries on the same day every week (Fridays :P). That way I don't have the gradual loss of functioning without noticing it (or rationalizing it's the environment, etc., etc.) as I can't hear the warning tones my aids...

Netflix may have to provide closed captions online

Saw this article re Netflix. Just like the rulings for other fare offered on the Internet, it's time to make things as accessible as possible. Theaters are now providing captioning with more technology becoming available. Etc. Each step along the way had it's legal battles to bring businesses...

Being mean for the sake of being mean

It's normal to be nervous about meeting family much less spending an entire week as guests! IMO, you are very courageous! :cool2: I know how I would be worrying, too, even without the communication issues. Totally normal! :P I would definitely talk about your feelings with him, your concerns and...

    How are you feeling today?....

Unfortunately, no. The old molds are 3 years old and don't fit well, so I get feedback much sooner when I need to up the volume. Plus they are starting to make my ears itch a bit. :( Eventually even hypoallergenic molds begin to break down and not fit well. :| My audiologist agreed with me...

What did you do today? Part II

Had a nice final class in ASL last night. We had potluck and still had a lesson, too. :P All of us, HOH or Late Deafened, have become connected in our 6 weeks, 2 nights/week, classes. And some knew each other from the series of classes last fall. We all "get it" how losing hearing later in life...

    How are you feeling today?....

Feeling like, why *me?!?*  On June 7 went in to contract for new aids and get new impressions made for the molds. All supposed to be back to the audiologist within two weeks. Didn't hear from them by the end of last week, so I emailed to ask. Turns out they used the U.S. Post Office...

What are you thinking about? Part V

Tonight is the last night of our ASL classes. :( We are having a potluck party. :) Now we will have to practice on our own until the next series of classes. My husband (hearing) and I were talking about trying to use signs for whatever we know while we are talking to each other, and practice...

    Last Movie You Watched?

Watched a sad soap opera type dud (IMO) last night, " Fireflies in the Garden." Somehow expected better because of some of the actors. Oh, well, on to the next movie! :P

    Table scraps......

I know! Poor Mika, when my husband & I are practicing our ASL, she goes nuts. (She doesn't do this when we are just talking.) Gets so confused. Starts barking and poking us with her nose, her eyes big as saucers! Like she has her "hands on her hips" and is demanding to know what the heck we are...

    How are you feeling today?....

Feeling kind of sad... Our last ASL class is tomorrow evening. Then we wait until the deaf advocacy agency can generate funds to have another series of classes. In the meantime, with our new friends, we'll try to keep practicing the vocabulary we've learned so we don't forget it. :P

    Table scraps......

LOL! :laugh2: My Mika tries to look away --- what she doesn't see, she doesn't have to obey, right? :giggle: I am more stubborn than she is, though, and I just get in her face again with the STOP sign. :P Also, the intensity with which I sign STOP! conveys a lot, too... She knows to what degree...
