just how bad is my idea?

Heh. You should make one that says "WHAT??" And before I get jumped on, I mean it sardonically. As an audiologist, I hear that EVERY $#&^(ING TIME I tell someone what I do. It's not funny. It's not clever. It is, in fact, super rude, ANNOYING, and embarrassing to me as it demonstrates how...

    Shooting at Texas A&M

I wish it was as easy as saying it's just the nature of the state. But Iowa had an on-campus mass shooting in 1991. And we're a pretty progressive state.

Honest but possibly stupid questions from the hearing conservationist in the room

Anij, you beat me to my next response, and stated it pretty perfectly. Yeah, once my contacts are in, my vision is 20/20...as good as if my eye's lenses were completely normal. There are vision diseases (like retinal deterioration) which might be more like hearing loss. And hearing losses...

Honest but possibly stupid questions from the hearing conservationist in the room

We hear a lot of this (aha). There's this idea that people automatically know how loud is damaging. But people don't - which is why noise is one of the leading causes of hearing loss. And as for chemical exposures, most people have absolutely no idea chemicals can even cause damage. It's not...

    % vs dB-hate it

As an audiologist, I hate the % too...and yet you'd be surprised how many patients ask for it, and how many doctors will just casually throw out a number. The percentage formulas (and there are more than one) focus on speech frequencies. But they tell you nothing about the person's hearing. A...

Do you sign to your pets?

My dog is very visual, so I sign to her. It helps now that she's 15, and losing hearing. She signs back, too...if she wants her face petted, she strokes her nose. If I "wag" my arm at her, she wags back. Of course, most of her communication comes in the form of blatant mind control.

Honest but possibly stupid questions from the hearing conservationist in the room

First question: If you're born with hearing loss, is it really hearing "loss"? Audiologists go through grief counseling training at some schools, to prepare us to deal with the deep sense of loss patients experience when they recognize their hearing is no longer normal...but what about if you...

Honest but possibly stupid questions from the hearing conservationist in the room

Heya. So, some background: I'm an audiologist. I spent ten years splitting my time between clinical practice and hearing conservation/ hearing loss prevention before deciding that, since the majority of the hearing losses I saw could have been at least partially prevented, I was going about...

10 things you shouldn't say to a deaf person

Hm. I think I'm guilty of #10... and glad a lot of you don't find that objectionable. Seriously, how is it different from telling someone their French is really good? I should be so lucky as to ever sign to the point where someone would compliment me on it...but about the best I can manage...

    Dissapointed with House Ear Clinic

First, love your ear-bling. I spent years trying to get patients to go a little nuts with their hearing aids because why would you be as frumpy as possible with something that costs that much and is on your ear every day? ABR can measure brainwave from the cochlea through the brain. ABR isn't...

where i buy an analog hearing aids with low cost price?

If you're low-income, Lions' clubs around the US refurbish old hearing aids and provide them at no cost. They usually cover the cost of a hearing test as well. Medicaid usually covers aids, but again, you have to qualify. For kids, some of the state agencies (DSCC) take care of it. For...

Hearing Aid Insurance for Cats and Dogs

Giving a dog a hearing aid seems like a genius way of getting a hearing aid battery into that dog's stomach. They do eat the things. Plus, what do you do with floppy eared dogs? Nonstop feedback, poor fit... I know an audiologist who did a hearing aid fitting on a dog. Once. A gazillion...

    A couple questions

Nothing that goes through your son's ears will give him "normal" hearing. He has a profound hearing loss. What the hearing aids do is to amplify normal sounds. So say a speech sound is a 50 dB input. The hearing aids add 60 dB, which gives him a 110 dB sound. SInce that's over his...

Analog Vs Digital hearing aids for profoundly deaf people

I gotta log in here more often...always something new. I'm an audiologist, and I think I can offer some explanation as to why people with severe to profound hearing loss are having difficulty with digitals. At moderate outputs, the sound quality differences of analog and digital hearing aids...

    Color HA's and Ha's molds...

I was hoping to post about those and couldn't find the right part of the site. Yeah, Westone can also put pictures on the earmolds. Actual photos. Westone rocks. Hear Again: I think it was a combination of the battery insertion and the new look. I hate to say it, but the vast, vast, vast...

    Color HA's and Ha's molds...

Those FACES are cool...we don't work much with Microtech, so I hadn't seen them before. They might fit over a different brand, but probably not very securely. I like the idea of earring covers for hearing aids, but realistically, it'd be hard to suit all the different ear shapes. One of...

    Color HA's and Ha's molds...

I really wanted to go into hearing aid design...make something sleek and shiny, a few gems... I think the Phonak/ Duracell shows the little boy with colored aids, but you're right, they're portrayed only on kids. And I was going to say earlier (but sidetracked) that if you have two hearing...

    Color HA's and Ha's molds...

When I am old ...I'll still feel young. What a great ad that would be! Oticon used to do a set that was either half purple/ half orange, or half yellow/ half blue. They could do either side, so if you got a set, you'd get the outside in one color, the inside in the other. So if you had...

    Color HA's and Ha's molds...

Um...I meant they had purple in some models. Obviously, they only have purple in purple. It must be Monday! Oticon also has a nice line of translucents. As far as LEDs go...the energy consumption might not be that bad. Especially compared to the drain of a normal hearing aid. You'd see...

    Color HA's and Ha's molds...

Wow, I am so glad to see people actually getting some color into their lives! I'm an audiologist, and I tried to get permission to do my thesis on: "Why are HAs so Darn Ugly?" Because 50 years ago, they were huge, but stylin', and now...yeech! So as an audiologist, let me comment: Yes...
