    Deaf & Autistic

So, big suprise... autism has been mentioned for Tyler. Even though I knew that was what they were thinking... it's still devistating for me! I don't believe he is autistic... but they have ruined my spirits. :( Anyone here have experience with a deaf autistic child? And if so, what are...

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

Yes, he makes sounds... he has always made lots of sounds. I'd say it sounds like a lot of baby babble... but with intonation. So, when we say peek-a-boo - he'd say ee-a-oo - it sounds very similar like he's trying but with little to no consonents. Even when we say "dada" he repeats...

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

A bit confused here with what you mean? Tyler was moderate/severe to severe at birth, hearing aids at 5 months old, signs for the past 2 years as well as constant speech & SLP. I know he's getting some speech (definetely not all but some) so doesn't that give him something?

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

I've been noticing lately a lot of intonation with Tyler... but it sounds like he's missing so many consonents if that makes any sense. So... for all of you late talkers? How do I know if I should just relax, not stress, keep doing ASL, and hope for speech to come in the next couple years...

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

Oh yes... like I've said before we are doing signs with him - we have been for the past 2 years but just in the past month or two he has really exploded and has started to use them back. We are soooo pleased! I know he's getting some sounds - but I just don't know how much - he responds to...

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

Maybe everyone misunderstood me (again) but I just want Tyler to understand me and respond. I don't care if it's ASL or Oral... I'd love for him to do both... but I don't care. I'm just trying to give him whatever is necessary - whether its ASL, cochlear, ha's, whatever - I am grasping at...

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

You have to understand for me and no prior knowledge of hearing loss - hearing and understanding just happens naturally. You ask me what I want... I just want him to be able to to understand me. Yes, I understand understanding also comes from ASL... I get that. All this backwards...

I'd love both hearing and understanding! And how he chooses to respond can be his choice... although I will still promote both.

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

A successful ci for Tyler would be a true without a doubt response that he understands when we speak - head turn, sign response, oral response, etc... We are so up in the air right now... we have no idea what he hears and what he doesn't. Sometimes I wonder if he turns because of movement...

So, how can they diagnose then? I want to make sure it's not a disorder and implant and it not be sucessful.

    Seperation/Divorce

That's how I'd feel too... but dh just can't come together with me. No matter how much I do, he continuously feels overwhelmed. And even though he won't admit it, he thinks God is out to get him... he thinks he is destined for disabled children. It's sad... but no matter how much I try...

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

Oh here's another thing the manager of IHP suggested... along with autism... dyspraxia I can see how they may think dyspraxia... because he does have some of these tendancies... but I agree with Faire_Jour... I think ultimately it comes down to his hearing loss.

Do you think I am on the right path? Is there anything else I should be doing or demanding for Tyler? You guys have been my knowledge in all of this!

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

Tyler just turned 3... I know he's missed a lot... but I am hopeful with the amount of work I will put in, he will be okay. I don't care if he signs and speaks... that's ultimately his choice! I want oral to be available to him though. What he does with it, is his choice! I'm not giving up...

Update - no more Mrs. Nice Girl!

I'm just happy the Cochlear Unit is going to be reviewing Tyler's info tomorrow. I explained to them his age, lack of speech/language, and urgency for help. Let's hope they are willing to see him again.
