What is it so bad about CI?

The problem is there ARE people who think that CI's are genocide, or that they are evil, or even the result of Audism and that deaf people should shun them 100% and "stay deaf" or else they are traitors to the deaf community. I think that only with time and education will this attitude go away.

    Helping the Deaf Hear Music

My Dad has perfect pitch, and it is something I have always been in awe of. Its not even something I can comprehend properly, even WITH my CI.

Music Perception Study by Subjects with Cochlear Implants

I participated in this study last spring, and was asked in the "Helping the Deaf Hear Music" thread if I would share them. Since I didn't want to completely hijack Miss-Delectable's thread, I thought it prudent to make a separate post for the study results. -------------------- Music...

what they don't tell you about CIs

I've tried to sleep with my CI on, but I can't seem to "shut down" my brain and sleep..the tiniest sound keeps me awake! I can only sleep once I turn it off/remove the processor.

    Helping the Deaf Hear Music

R2 I'm not sure if it will use the new programs - will find out when I get there. I just asked my audie if I can share the results of the study Cochlear did (I received them the other day.) He's asking Cochlear and if I get the go-ahead, I'll post them here. Jillio pretty much - though I...

Sign in if you're proud to be Deaf

While my deafness is definitely a part of me, and always will be, I can't say I'm 'proud' of it - it simply is a fact of life for me. With my CI I also now have the option of being able to hear, AND being deaf when I chose. I prefer to have my life defined by who I am, and my actions, not my...

what they don't tell you about CIs

But the point is still moot if there was not enough residual hearing in the first place to be of any benefit! Even if I were to want to have my CI removed (which will never happen) the residual hearing I had was giving me NO benefit whatsoever, so I'd be no worse off than I was before I got my CI.

The Economics of Cochlear Implants and Deafness?

I get defensive because I have had the experience of people telling me point blank that my accomplishments and experiences are not worth listening to *because* I'm post lingual. It came across as "more of the same." Glad its not that way, and thank you for your good thoughts.

    Helping the Deaf Hear Music

Oh THAT one that I did for Cochlear...to be honest I have no idea what the results of that one was...it was SO HARD!! The way it was laid out, there were about 10 different tunes you could chose from, but the thing is, they played them WITHOUT MELODY. So for example they would play "Twinkle...

The Economics of Cochlear Implants and Deafness?

I REALIZE that I'm post-lingual. You don't need to point that out. I was simply stating that it IS possible. I have learned quick that posting anything positive in this forum regarding CI's is like tip-toe'ing through a minefield, and I have to put an *** on every single thing I say because...

The Economics of Cochlear Implants and Deafness?

I'd like to lend a bit of personal experience- in Dec, I finished two sessions of classes at my local community college, and was able to do everything on my own, without needing a note-taker or interpreter. I tried that once, more than 15 years ago at the same college, back when I only had my...

Cochlear implant recipients experience improvement in quality of life

No problem whatsoever...I'm glad you posted it. Its always important to learn new things, and I'm glad to see that these kinds of studies *are* being made. I'd love to read a comparison between pre and post lingually deafened children and CI's. Unfortunately, that seems to be the norm here...
