Should we support Paddy Ladd ?

If you are on the losing side fess up ! Don't go making a side of issue of don't read it, if only deaf are gong tor ead and agree with it, then the book has no purpose, since it is entitled 'Understanding Deafhood' ! If we don't read it we won't understand it will we ? Sadlythere are deaf who...

Should we support Paddy Ladd ?

Are there laws on how we should be labeled? If there was, 'Understanding Deafhood' would never have been printed. As a deaf person I am perfectly entitled to query Mr Ladd on deaf issues, he talks about us doesn't he ? he makes claims about us doesn't he ? He never actually defines deaf...

Should we support Paddy Ladd ?

I was rather expectig this sort of response frankly , now it's down to 'non-acceptance' of being deaf. I was expecting that, (Not quite so early in the discussion but...), and the 'reading things wrong' suggestion as well, is there no way to get a decent response anymore ? We're right...

Should we support Paddy Ladd ?

The discrimination is NOT against linguistic sign users, at all, it is simply a perception that people who can't hear are stupid, it's a e deaf thing (db), basically, it doesn't differentiate specifically TO the sign user, but is applied pretty generally, a fact Mr Ladd doesn't say ! He makes...

Should we support Paddy Ladd ?

I stand by the fact, there are many ASL and BSL users who would NOT be able to follow Mr Ladd's book, it is over 500 pages long, we'd all struggle, it is an academic offering for the perusal of hearing,it's not FOR the deaf, it's about them from his perspective. America is trying to run...

Should we support Paddy Ladd ?

That's the point he is trying to relate yesterday with today. Milan is irrelevant to today, there is nothing like the discrimination' of the Milan declaration today. Mr Ladd has never produced statistical fact to prove it this century. As deaf culture is always a 'new' event each generation...

Should we support Paddy Ladd ?

For those unaware he wrote a book called "Understanding Deaf Culture", a book at present in the middle of debate on it's bias and validity as a reference book. While the historical references are valid enough you can chck them on google, the rest is his own viewpoint masquerading as fact. A...

Do your bit to help the deaf

This group is hardly in a position to offer deaf awareness to anyone ! It doesn't even hire deaf people, you said it, COMPANY, it's nothing to do with deaf people, they just make a living out of us. THey have 1100 HEARING staff and next to nothing but a few token deaf. Deaf people want...

Dont u get tired of these comments?

I'd ignore them anyway, no wonder the deaf community is under seige these days, and memberships dwindling, everyone has an 'ism' to shout about, if only they would shout UNITY and ACCEPTANCE for all. Try telling deaf sign users they are a pain the butt and they get annoyed, works both ways...

Bloggers Sound Off On Wright Trial

I doubt, it will have the effect on the trial, despite bloggers winning the Gallaudet debate, and so it shouldn't. We've already read of bias suggestions via color and deafness and sign-language, there is an attempt by some bloggers to influence the verdict, in the deaf person's favor. Let's...

Sound or silence? Implants give deaf people option

Parents don't make CI decisions based on if the cultural deaf like it or not, parents have a wider responsibility to their child, to enable them to function in a world that is mostly not governed by silence or sign language. The suggestion they could alienate their child in the future from the...

Cochlear implants: miracle or an attack on "deaf culture"?

If you look up Bacterial Meningitis on the net, and compare any statistic on it, then CI's figure very low on the scale as a cause. The only time you see it mentioned is when deaf activists want to go "SEE, I told you !!!!!", to make a sign-language and cultural point, of course nobody has ever...

Cochlear implants: miracle or an attack on "deaf culture"?

I respectfully suggest Ms Delectable wanted some contention with this topic heading, but it is a dead issue these days. A lot have moved on even in the deaf 'community' and there's more important issues to debate, like the huge divides that just get wider and wider. Before you know it, Deaf...

Cochlear implants: miracle or an attack on "deaf culture"?

CI's aren't a miracle, but they do help a lot of people enormously. Are they an attack on deaf culture ? no, no more than any hearing aids are. They also do not affect choice, you want 'deaf' ? you just switch them off again.

Smith files Deaf Child’s Bill of Rights Act

Oral chauvenism ? that's a new one ! In fact it was on the BBC here 2 days ago, that mainstream schools are adopting Makaton for the youngest pupils to assist learning. Our schools rejected BSL and teaching SE to hearing children, recent national petitions to our Parliament for BSL in schools...
