Frankly, my hypervigilance makes me notice the smallest of sounds. When I concentrate, they go away, but it's difficult for me to get into that zone at times. And when inconsiderate neighbors decide that I need to share their terrible taste in music, that's it. Cannot stand loud noises - partly...
5 others (here) on Aug 5.
Famous people? Neil Armstrong (I can't make momentous speeches on the spot, neither :naughty:), Loni Anderson, John Saxon (Enter the Dragon)...Tawny Kitaen...Patrick Ewing, John Huston, Maureen McCormick, etc.
That always struck me as odd, too. I remember when they started doing that in when I was in middle school. First day of school would be on a Wednesday, or a "Teacher Duty Day" would be on a Tuesday. Just messed me up! :giggle:
I don't think deafness is a disability. I think the term "disability" is overused anymore to the point where it almost has no constructive meaning. It's also overused for the purposes of PR - "Look at us! We're [Company]! We employ "the disabled"! We're sensitive!"
I was laid off in Feb 2011, and I got a decent severance. I was able to take care of some pressing big bills with it, and for that, I'm grateful. I'm about to go into an extension on unemployment. I live very frugally and simply, so I'm okay for now.
What's really getting to me is finding work...
Whenever some idiot around me made an ignorant comment about the deaf and music, I'd just remind him that Beethoven composed some of the world's most beautiful and renowned music (including my very favorite choral work) while going and then after he'd gone completely deaf. Not to mention there...
I don't think the WM3 did it. What physical evidence there was couldn't be conclusively linked to them and any testimony that didn't point to the 3 was ignored or downright discarded (I recall reading of and seeing later in a doco the story from an employee of the local Bojangles who called the...
I'm in a linguistics geek - language of all kinds fascinates me. However, I've always preferred to communicate non-verbally (even when I could speak or when my voice cooperates these days). It seems that people are "educated" for the most part to ignore non-verbal communication except as...
New (and hearie) as I am, I don't have much problem understanding Travis' posts. At first my brain said, "Pardon?" And then...it switched...and it was as if I was transliterating pictographs to words and I understood. Just takes an extra second.
I think it's awesome.
I'm thinking about a good bowl of chicken noodle soup. Though it's still hot out!
I'm also thinking about a waterfall...cold water raining down on my head.
Completely change your life and your body so I don't have to exert any effort. I get that a lot with people who've heard about "voice therapies" from a 2-minute segment on the evening news.
