Cochlear Loses $131.2 Million Verdict in Hearing-Implant Lawsuit

I generally think the patent system in this country is broken. Patents are almost always bullshit these days. This lawsuit says Cochlear is infringing on two patents. Look at the first infringing patent: 5,609,616. This basically describes a testbed setup. There's nothing novel here. This...

To Cochlear Implant or to re-Hearing Aid; know thyself what you want, my Deaf ears?

I generally agree, but I've met a number of implanted people who have better hearing comprehension than most normal hearing people I know. More than I would have expected, really. My subjective experiences are actually pretty much the polar opposite of yours -- it's extremely rare that I meet...

CI and long/thick hair - shave around magnet?

I like having enough magnets that the processor can just hang from my ear by the magnet alone. Makes losing the Harmony a lot harder and wearing the Neptune a bit easier. In addition it makes the headpiece less likely to slip off or lose sync through the various bumps, nudges and jolts one...

    Question about CI...urgent

You can hear low frequency sounds with a CI, but they're different. First off, they're higher pitched than you would expect, due to the fact that a good portion of what we perceive as low frequency sound is due to the basilar membrane itself resonating (up to 1000 Hz, which allows sound...

Widex Super 440 SP vs Oticon Chili SP 9

It's hard to say, the Widex Senso Diva is now too quiet for me, it is pretty much maxed out capacity wise. I have always preferred the Diva's low frequency response when I put it in to try it out, as it goes lower than the Naida which only goes down to about 140 Hz. The bass on the Widex is also...

Widex Super 440 SP vs Oticon Chili SP 9

I had a Widex aid before my Naida and the sound quality was always quite good compared to any other aid of it's time. I can't help you with the current ones, but I was a pretty happy Widex user for almost a decade. I also was unhappy with the Naida sound quality at the start, but after a...

    Implant and/or Hearing Aids

I also use both a hearing aid and an implant. The technical term for this is "bimodal" so if you want some more information, you can google that. There are quite a few of us. It has been working great for me, with a Phonak Naida HA and an Advanced Bionics implant. I had a similar hearing loss...

To Cochlear Implant or to re-Hearing Aid; know thyself what you want, my Deaf ears?

Dead in that I never fit it with a HA that provided much assistance. Dead in that it was totally useless to me before I was implanted. Technically, it was never without some hearing until I was implanted. It wasn't clinically dead, Jim... heh. I had about 110dB loss when that ear was implanted.

To Cochlear Implant or to re-Hearing Aid; know thyself what you want, my Deaf ears?

I don't want to get in an argument, but your post is rubbing me the wrong way. I do perceive the effect you are talking about, and have listened and do listen plenty without my HA. But the fact of the matter is that the effect is far weaker than the natural response my natural hearing gives...

    transmitting coil cochlear implant

The annoying part of headpieces is they don't behave like most objects when falling.. they will literally arc towards metal and attach to the nearest metal surface. It makes the usual process of trying to find a lost object a LOT stranger.

    transmitting coil cochlear implant

For AB, the internal device is waranted for 10 years for any reason of failure, the processor is warranted for a year, the headpieces are warranted for a year, batteries are warranted for 90 days and I am not sure about the microphones. FWIW, none of my equipment has failed other than an...

To Cochlear Implant or to re-Hearing Aid; know thyself what you want, my Deaf ears?

Yeah, go to to a CI center and see if you're a candidate. Many ENTs have their own audiology services and would much rather have patients using HAs that generate income for them rather than recommend they get CIs. Same for generic audiology departments. They can provide biased info in the hopes...

Difference between a dome and ear mould?

Earmolds plug your ear, so the sound produced by the hearing aid can't escape out your ear canal. This allows for higher levels of amplification. Domes don't plug your ear up, so you can still hear sounds naturally in addition to the amplification provided by the HA. Depending on your loss...

    Problems with cochlear implant

You're new... it does take some time for your brain to become accustomed to the CI input. I got headaches and tinnitus in the first week.

Looking for a good Headphone for AB Harmony

Most cans have worked okay for me with my Harmony and Neptune. My real issue is getting good sound on my ear that still has some natural hearing. Do you have any hearing in the contralateral ear? The current set I've been pleased with for that has been a pair of AIAIAI TMA-1 Studio...

Gallaudet Graduate Student - Cochlear Implant Controversy Presentation

Seriously? Someone produces stats that disagree with yours, and you tell them they have to find your stats and you won't produce them and that theirs are wrong. The reason you won't produce your stats is because they do not exist. CIs are quite successful when implanted in children. You...

The new Advanced Bionics CI just came out!

Roger is only mono too, so stereo audio isn't possible with it. The frequency range is also a bit lower (max 7300 Hz instead of the usual 8700 Hz). Hopefully Phonak/AB will come out with a design integrated Phonak FM receiver for the Q70's boot battery. I'm surprised they haven't, since a...

    Naida CI reviews

I think that the Naida waterproof thing will likely be a watertight case combined with a Neptune AquaMic. Still, like meg says, you should probably wait to see before making any decisions. Many insurance companies will pay for CI equipment, you'd have to check with them. It's usually...
