HoH dad of 4 month old not hearing daughter. Here for the new road we will be on.

Welcome. I just joined recently too as my 3 year old has been exhibiting signs of hearing loss since around December (very sudden). We are taking her tomorrow for a sedated ABR test- I'll be thinking of your family while we are going through similar things tomorrow. I am sure you are ready to...

    Anyone going to DeafNation?

Ok, I keep coming back to this post and at the expense of sounding stupid, I am just going to go ahead and ask my quesion... What is DeafNation? I am assuming it is a big event where Deaf people meet up but was wondering if it is like a convention or what goes on at this :). (In case you...

    Waaahhhh, Me no toy, why???

Too funny! I had a cat growing up that let me put a LIVE hamster on her head!! She was sitting almost like that and I have a picture of her with the hamster on her head- she didn't move AT ALL! (The cat I have now would not let you do that, that is for sure!)

    Florida...the Sunshine State....

Have lived in FL most of my life (born in Jacksonville, family moved for few years to upstate NY, then back to FL- moved to VA as an adult but moved back to FL in '07 to be close to my parents and siblings). Live about 30-45 minutes from Gainesville and St. Augustine right now and about an hour...

    Missing out on car music....

LOL, soulchill! :) That is a good one! "Love Me Tender" is a song Elvis Presley sang, so definitely a good one :). Hey, you could find quite a few "types" of people interested in it possibly- Elvis collectors, car collectors, vintage collectors (possibly vintage toy collectors because it...

    Missing out on car music....

It really looks like it was a homemade piece but maybe it was store bought. Definitely older I would think- you don't see stuff made like that nowadays. Did your mom happen to say what song it played (if she knew)? I have always liked music boxes like that- they usually play a really pretty...

    So many questions- Please help!

I definitely understand that "oh my god how are we going to do this?" feeling :). We are in the process of finding out what our three year olds hearing loss is (she just seemed to suddenly lose her hearing in December so it has been a complete change for us and we are still waiting on answers)...

    Missing out on car music....

dereksbicycles, don't you really like cars though? (I am thinking it is you that I have seen post about various cars before but maybe I am wrong.) Why would you get rid of it if it was something you found interesting in the first place? When you bought it you did not know that it played...

    Ok, I have to brag...

deafbirk- No, we use the "making a patty with your hands" sign like Babyblue described... The "sign" you are describing sounds to me like what kids do to make an "arm fart" ;). I can't even imagine why a sign like that would be used for hamburger (if it indeed is hmmm?).

    Ok, I have to brag...

I think you're right, LoveBlue :). Since she started showing signs that she has lost her hearing her speech has become pretty hard to understand at times (she mumbles and runs it together) so a lot of times I give her a confused look and say "what?" a few times before I can figure out what she...

    Ok, I have to brag...

Maybe I shouldn't say brag, but I guess that is what it is :) ... After my initial "posts of panic" I have just been silently reading around the site trying to get comfortable and a sense of things. So- I just had to share some happy thoughts (after all the panic I shared initially)!! My...

    Completely Lost...

I am not really afraid that I will be the only hearing parent (I think I read that 90% of dhh kids are born to hearing parents). Guess that's the other issue- I don't KNOW any HEARING parents of dhh kids either :). Like I said, I am really shy- so even meeting the hearing people will be a...

Guess I should have done this last night...

deafgam- Do you know what caused your granddaughter's hearing loss? Had she been that way since birth and it just is becoming noticeable or was it sudden? I am a bit lost as to how this all could have happened (I am thinking it might be nerve damage due to some recent falls she took but not...

Guess I should have done this last night...

shel90- I have not contacted FSDB yet about services for her but I did learn from a friend of mine (who is deaf-blind) that they were offering free ASL classes so I registered for that. It is an online class for parents of dhh kids (I explained to them that I was not sure of our status yet and...

    Completely Lost...

In the ER the doctor did use a tuning fork. When he put it to her right side the first time she moved towards me, but she is also a shy child and I think she was moving more from him than any sound at that moment. I explained to her that it was ok and he put it to her other side and then back...

    Completely Lost...

I definitely get that thought... I have always been a little resistant to change (it makes me nervous, the unknown of it) but I know that this isn't as scary as if she had health problems or something like that. Unknown just really freaks me out . I think the biggest worry I have is...

    Completely Lost...

I've had read a few posts of her's and noticed that, deafdyke :). Maybe it is a good sign that someone on here saw my post and they live "near" me and their kid goes to the school I would hope to put my daughter in :)... I know I have jumped the gun by joining here without a true diagnosis but...
