Bad News - Denied for CI

Phi I worry about one thing, the CI ear tends to become the better ear. You might not be able to have as much use out of your "good" ear. It might be more damaging to that ear in sound. I do not want you to become frustrated.

I hope I answered some of your questions. Maybe others can fill in the areas I do not know about.

How well does your CI actually work?

Just after 2 years, I am at the point I can understand without lip reading. I still lipread at times. Most of the things like lipreading, caption, and looking around are just habit. I have to teach myself how to do things without visual cues.

    Sound and Fury DVD

I do believe there are many in-between. I sat in a room with at least 50 CI users at the HLAA convention. Many use oral and some use ASL. Even me who does not know as much ASL as I would like, was able to communicate with a few signs. It is a matter of what the person is comfortable with. The...

Bad News - Denied for CI

okay I get it now. They are using your good ear as a reason to deny your implant. Aww. Just thinking I thought they do not want to implant someone with good hearing in one ear. You can appeal your denial. Your dr office will file the claim. Check with the CI brand you want to use, they always...

    Audiogram vs Real life

What does Ms. Kat want? Since I am bilateral it is easy to say go, but I met a few who just love having one CI. I think it is less about scores and more about what she is comfortable with. I like your idea on placement. I can see a fight happening. I think more from a curriculum stand point...

Bad News - Denied for CI

since you have that much hearing unaided, I would not even want a CI. A CI is for the last resort. I had 1% in right ear and 17% in left. Hearing aids are useless. If you hearing is progressive then you should qualify in a few years.

After surgery and recovery for CI

My surgery was same day. I arrived at 6:30 am and left the Vanderbilt Medical Center at 4:00 pm. Recovery is different for bilateral. It is impossible to get comfortable sleeping. I also had dizziness and balance issues(had it before surgery, just got worst). It took 7 days to get back...

    Audiograms and hearing tests

Just this past year, I learned how to read my audiogram. I still don't worry about the fine details. I can't worry about each db or drop in sounds. I also understand that a test in the booth is nothing like daily life. When I have problems saying sounds, it is time for a tune up.

    My first appointment for CI

Alot of first claims are not approved. Good luck since Medicare approved it. I had to fight my insurance for over a year to approve my bilateral implants. It was worth it. I look forward to hearing all about your journey.

    Freedom Implant rubbing

Moleskin is great. I found it at our neighborhood Walgreens. It's very cheap. I cut a small piece and just attached it to my ear, it stays for a week. Try it, it works.

    My first appointment for CI

I have bilateral cochlear implants. I'm not young and I don't have another disabilities. It depends on hearing loss and insurance. I have private insurance and after fighting for it, they approved it. I know several who have bilateral cis. It is common in my circle of ci friends.

Are or were you worried about hearing worse with CI?

I also hear way better with CIs than hearing aids ever. The questions your audie answered. The audie did a good job of answering them. Let me add something to them. 70% is extremely good, better then expected, especially in such a short time. CI's might be beneficial, but keep some...

How long do you wear your HA/Ci's in a day?

I put both CIs on after I blow dry my hair. I kept them on until around 8 at night. Sunday is the day I don't usually wear them at all. I give my ears a break from hearing and enjoy the quiet.
