    Whoa!

Yes, I agree with you. The way the audiologist has gone about this without the parent's consent sounds very unethical and unprofessional. I hope you can make notes from our own experiences when you go to meet her. i.e. dates should only be arranged by the surgeon, when candidacy has been...

    Whoa!

Yes - it does sound odd. My audie never scheduled my CI surgery. I had to meet separately with the surgeon for the testing and it was his office that made the arrangements together with the hospital. I also had to sign consent forms and a form to show that I understood the risks of surgery...

Difference between Cochlear contour and Freedom implants

LOL Southfella! Wait til you have kids and your nifty remote will disappear behind the sofa with the beheaded Barbie doll or get taken apart. Or if you are someone like me, you'll lose it on day 5 . I have enough trouble keeping track of my car keys :giggle: My last lot of hearing aids...

    Cochlear Implants in fiction.

Hi Dreama, I did have hypersensitivity with hearing aids, but that was due to the damage in the inner ear. I don't have the same problem anymore with a CI, because the CI bypasses the area of the ear causing the hypersensitivity - it is artificial hearing remember. It's possible that you...

    Cochlear Implants in fiction.

Hmm interesting - I hope the character wearing the CI isn't evil :giggle: Seriously though: 1. Intense heat - same as for HA wearers, you'd need to worry about the sweat affecting the external processor. I don't think the internal part would be affected and if it was, then non CI wearers...

    Shower and CI

I always airdry my hair and put the CI back on when it's damp but not quite dry yet. I haven't had any problems so far but then I use the dry and store every night. However, I would defer to the others especially as you have experience a problem with wet hair.

    CI Moments

Awww I'm so happy for you Raykat, it sounds like you are doing very well. I was wondering how you were going after your first few posts after activation. BTW I can't believe how violent storms sound either. I was able to hear storms with hearing aids but used to wonder why people got scared...

    Dizziness / tinnitus and CI

Is this the first and only time it's happened? It could be the map, post operation issues or nothing, just your ear getting used to the CI. If you continue to be concerned about it I would go back to your audiologist/surgeon and allow them to narrow it down. They have your medical history...

    Mappings

Yeah - every 6 months from the beginning is not good. The brain goes through a very steep learning curve for the first 12 weeks after activation and beyond and the mappings need to be frequent enough to keep up with that... I didn't go to 6 months intervals until about a year past my activation.

hearing aids or cochlear implants for my 5 year old please advise

Hi Richard, I have a 5 year old daughter too! :) Cute aren't they? I'm just wondering if you have spoken to her at all about your considerations? Although she may not fully appreciate the risks and benefits of surgery, she may have some of her own feelings on the matter. I assume that...

    Can You Trust Audiologists?

I've been through a lot of audiologists in my life. Like some of you here, I've come across some real cowboys who tried to "sell" rather than get me a good fit. I remember asking one guy why he was recommending me a particular hearing aid and he couldn't answer the question - scary. However...

FDA sues Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant maker for 2.2 million in fines for manufac

Jillio. No disagreement from me about the need for counselling for all, since as you say, while there are many good outcomes results can vary quite a lot. However, late implantees with minimal auditory stimulation from childhood get consistently poorer results than other groups and would...

FDA sues Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant maker for 2.2 million in fines for manufac

I think that later implantations should come with extensive counselling so that the young person understand that their results on the whole, will not be the same as that for their younger implanted friends and education required to show that for those whose hearing hasn't been well stimulated in...

Interesting article about implants and meningitis

Source Implant infection answer a winner | The Australian Implant infection answer a winner The puzzle of why people with cochlear implants are more susceptible to meningitis has been discovered by a Victorian researcher. Bianca Nogrady reports | June 21, 2008 THE brain is an...

FDA sues Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant maker for 2.2 million in fines for manufac

Compared to an adult who didn't do well phonetically from childhood then yes, that is correct. The listening skills that lead to successful use of a CI are learned early on in life and are stored by the brain even when progressive loss occurs further down the track. I believe the same...

    New generation Of CI!

The mind boggles! Probably something fully implantable. I got an e-mail from them asking me to participate in a survey about telephone use and whether we would like to see resources on their website that would allow us to practice.

FDA sues Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant maker for 2.2 million in fines for manufac

Most of us who get implanted as adults had enough residual hearing as children to be able to develop speech with the use of hearing aids. Most of us progressively lost that residual hearing to the point that CIs became a more viable option than hearing aids. Therefore we were able to transfer...

FDA sues Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant maker for 2.2 million in fines for manufac

What if we'd gladly make the choice as adults but could only benefit from a CI in childhood? The reality is that either way, you ARE making a choice for your child that they may or may not be happy with as adults, since results from a CI for those who don't benefit from hearing aids are quite...
