30 years since first CI surgery today :)

Um just to be clear on this - you think the implant goes in our brains? :laugh2: And you think we wear our speech processors in the shower and when swimming? :laugh2: I think you need to set yourself straight a bit on some facts and educate yourself about CIs. Relax and chill! We are...

FDA sues Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant maker for 2.2 million in fines for manufac

In the context of the example you raised of dangerous situations, if you are wearing a CI, HA, MP3 player or even a "walkman" then chances are that a hearing person (even stupid ones that think that HAs are music players) is probably going to assume you will have trouble hearing and may try and...

30 years since first CI surgery today :)

Yes! The IVF process also recently celebrated its 30th anniversary since the first birth as well. I've benefited from both :)

30 years since first CI surgery today :)

No...I wasn't invited and we have the vomiting bug in the house! I bet my surgeon is going though.

Deafness can't subdue a remarkable life

Thanks for sharing your daughter's story. It always makes me feel happy to come across parents who care deeply for their children, whichever route to communication or audition they follow :)

Difference between Cochlear contour and Freedom implants

I've heard of a few people preferring the 3G Espirit on some of my Cochlear groups. But usually, this wasn't because it was a "better" sound quality but because they found it very difficult to cope with the extra sensitivity of the Freedom to sounds. I guess when you are used to a certain...

FDA sues Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant maker for 2.2 million in fines for manufac

I think this goes to show that the my-brand-is-better-than-yours rhetoric is pointless. For the person whose device has failed, no matter what brand it is, the design, whether or not it has a remote, whether it makes you look like Dumbo just goes out the window on the scale of importance.

FDA sues Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant maker for 2.2 million in fines for manufac

How would someone be able to tell a signing deaf person visually? When not signing, they look exactly like hearing people. At least with a device on our ears, we look deaf on the outside. I've noticed sometimes that people change their behaviour when they see a HA or CI. For example making...

    CI Questions

Hi Serendipity, If you have done well with hearing aids until now, then there is a good chance you will benefit from a CI. The CI will sound horrible at first because it's a different medium of sound, but your brain will adjust and use your previous skills to interpret sound. That's why you...

FDA sues Advanced Bionics Cochlear Implant maker for 2.2 million in fines for manufac

Med El is not a big player in the US, which is the biggest market in the world for CIs. For a while, I believe they had problems getting FDA approval, I'm not sure of the reason why but anyway that affected their ability to establish there for a while. Their market share is now slowly growing...

Its that time - CI batteries

I use Zenipower and find that it consistently goes for a few hours longer than the Powerone, with no difference in sound quality. It's much cheaper for me to buy. I think you should experiment because we all seem to get different results. I have friends who have also experienced superior...

    Whoa!

Yes, there are always bad eggs in every group, who pull down the rest. If not this woman, then someone else. Good luck with your meeting and hope that it's not too difficult and ends on a more positive and constructive note.

Help this teacher! CI advice needed

It depends on how far away you live from the clinic and how flexible the audiologist is. Mine is 45 mins drive. Once in the early days when I was still newly CIed, I asked for my old program to be reloaded, as the new one was too loud. She squeezed me in the next day in between appointments...

Help this teacher! CI advice needed

Yes, I think you are right. I just remembered that we are warned never to place the CI on a baggage conveyor belt at the airport (I don't think many people would do that in case it gets squashed by a suitcase or gets lost but still we are warned).

Help this teacher! CI advice needed

Deafbajagal asked for responses from both adult posters here and those with children. that's why I responded. My post wasn't meant to be read as a reply from a parent's perspective. However, now that you mention it, I do have a lot of contact with static as a parent (of hearing children)...

Help this teacher! CI advice needed

I don't know. Static has never been a problem for me. I always keep my CIs either in the dry and store or the case (looks like a glasses case) that came with the package from Cochlear. I've never needed to put them in a nylon bag. I would probably advise against it, even though I assume the...

    Whoa!

Oh okay this makes a bit more sense now. Not everyone who ends up going to see the surgeon for an intial appointment to get more information and to get testing goes ahead with the surgery. My surgeon asked me several times in the initial stages if it was what I wanted to do, so getting an...

Difference between Cochlear contour and Freedom implants

Wow, I have absolutely no idea about ear stabilisation and the length of cords. Why does the ear have to be stabilised? Post surgery or learning to hear? I went straight to the BTE, although I did have the bodyworn as part of my package but have just never used it. I always thought that kids...

Difference between Cochlear contour and Freedom implants

Are you talking about the bodyworn version of the Freedom, Deafbajagal? I wasn't sure what you meant by the "cord".
