I’m late deafened and find myself not being able to identify with either hearing or deaf world. Anyone else feel the same? Trying to find my place.

You could benefit by joining a local group of HOH in your area... having others that have similar problems is really helpful. Yes, deafness can be depressing, but at the same time, it can be peaceful because you don't need to hear all the bunk that is around sound wise. As for your wife, she...

It is kind of like being in limbo... eventually, though, you will get comfortable with your own limitations. It is, however, an ongoing struggle with both good and not so good times. Hugs. As a HOH I know what you mean about not fitting into the hearing world or the deaf world. But there are...

Wow, I did not know that was available!

We would need to know your location before posting such links. However, the association for the deaf in your locale should have that information available for you.

    Odd person out ?

I did call to see if it was available in the area that I live... and no such luck, it's either pay which I can't afford or skip it. One would think some allowances would be available for low income or no income people, but that just isn't true here.

    Odd person out ?

You were accepted while hearing and that has really benefited you. I would recommend that you take a lip reading course though.

I really advocate those deaf camps. Have a friend that went and she can lipread so much better than I can. Plus they are fun and there is the chance to make life-long friendships. Very important to have a group of friends that you can relate to.

    Looking for a friend

Ask your local chamber of commerce for groups of hearing impaired people and meeting dates. Many welcome visitors. Depending where you live at some schools have large communities of deaf and hearing impaired individuals that will also have clubs or meetings for them.

    Questions

Audism is discrimination against people with hearing loss. It is very, very widespread.

    Deaf and Disabled in Politics

Very valid points... when trying to work in a hearing world deafness and partial deafness is not a minor thing, it is a huge barrier, there is so much discrimination out there it is ridiculous but one person cannot knock that wall down. Choose your path carefully, thinking where you can stand...

    "i'm a little bit deaf"....

Hearing parents need to get their deaf or partially deaf child enrolled in all the different things that are available so the child learns it's okay to be deaf. They must learn ASL and lip reading. They should attend camps that are available for the deaf children. The biggest hurdle is...

    "i'm a little bit deaf"....

I was shut down, too. The school said I wasn't smart enough to enroll in algebra a year earlier than it was standard to take. I wound up acing my math scores on my ACT and SAT so they wanted me in precalc. I had not taken anything close to that. When I wanted to join chorus since the whole...

    help needed

Seek out associations for the deaf that you can find in your area for help. If you don't know where to go, then seek out the associations for the disabled or handicapped, or at least the audiologist offices. They should be able to assist you.

    Odd person out ?

Since I have partial hearing and good verbal communication, I often find that I am the odd person, caught in the middle and not really able to fit in anywhere. Does anyone else have that same issue? I did not learn to sign or read lips as a child. As an adult I know when a person's mouth is...

Ear molds for hearing aids - what kind are most comfortable?

No, my hearing was stable... but I moved to a whole different area so I couldn't go to my usual Audiologist, and I was very happy with that service. This gal seems to be more intend on making money than on having happy customers. I used to get my tubes replaced, most of the time for free, and...

What jobs can you do with hearing loss?

That is so true... I wish it were not but many people are simply very biased against us. It is an ongoing battle and we can never prove such discrimination even though we know that was it! It isn't a matter of skills, it is a matter of personal biases by those responsible for hiring and...
