    Deafie/hearie Slang Origin?

It wasn't an insult with my sister's deaf and hearing friends when we were growing up. We all signed, and deafie and hearie were simple shortened designations like mom and pop, fifth grader or junior high guy, farm kid or city kid. Anything can also be taken as an insult by those determined to...

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

The way these threads work confuse me. I can't tell who says what, but the person who was peeved by hearing people saying "It's okay" when we tell them we're deaf is right. That is annoying, like they're giving us special permission to be deaf. Worse is when I say, "You're talking a bit too...

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

Now that I'm totally deaf and attended Montana School for the Deaf and was taught to study body language and detecting "tells" as part of speechreading, I slowly gained better abilities in observation. I would have never done so if I hadn't lost my hearing. My sister who was born deaf learned...

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

Okay, I give. All who constantly derailed this thread win. No more pet peeves, except this last one: The derails are good examples of the "crab bucket syndrome" many deaf people exhibit. No matter what another deaf person tries to accomplish, others take delight in pulling him down.

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

Good post, Whatdidyousay! Of course we can know the hearie world better is we share our deafie world with them. Back to pet peeves: Not really a peeve but a funny look on some hearing people's faces when they obviously have been talking to me while my back is turned. It's so funny when they tap...

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

Sorry about your experience. When I was little, I was a "hearie" and my sister was a "deafie." She was the older sibling and used the terms in writing, so there was less sting for us. Words themselves don't really cause problems--it's the attitude behind them. :ily:

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

It IS kind of making fun, as in "them" versus "us"--"hearies" opposed to "deafies." Before the equal terms, only the hearing kind of "put down" those of us who were deaf. Now, we deafies can tease back. And yes, "deafie" is a term of endearment my sweetie uses for me. She's my cute "hearie."

Yep, "Nevermind" is very frustrating to me. If it wasn't important, then why say it in the first place. Nevermind just means to me the person can't organize his or her thoughts very well.

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

DeafNerdMommy said, "My is when people start yelling at me..." Yep, yelling doesn't help me a bit. However, like your experience with HoH, when hearies talk a lot louder, they seem to articulate words better, and often I can read their lips easier. :ty: Ha ha ha, the downside is everyone...

    Who's Looking Forward To Football?!

I'm ashamed to say my brother is a San Francisco 49er fan. How low can a person get? His team and my Seahawks clash on September 25, and we have a ton of money bet on the game. Two whole dollars!

A Deafie's Pet Peeve About Living Among The Hearies

I'm the only deaf person in my circle of friends. I'm sure many hearies view my deafness as a hurdle to communications. This thread is a discussions of some problems innocently caused by those who don't understand ASL, lip-reading, notes, etcetera. Pet peeve #1. :yesway: thumbs up for...

Latent Deaf Adjusting To New Life

Hello, Kayla. If you mean "late" deafened, so am I. I was HoH for twenty years before I became totally deaf fifteen years ago. Because you and I can speak more like hearies, it's hard for the general public to realize we can't hear. To help them understand, habitually sign ASL while I speak. It...

Can Loud Noises Still Make Your Ears Hurt If You Can't Hear Them?

I'm totally deaf and shoot handguns once or twice a week.:rifle: I wear both ear plugs and the best ear muffs. It's not only a regulation on most ranges for all shooters, but my eardrums hurt if they're not protected. So another "Yes!" (nods fist) for an answer.

Man With Concealed Carry License Shot By Police During Traffic Stop

Having a sign on my vehicle or license saying I carry concealed is NOT a good idea. The whole idea is to keep my protection out of sight. If I wanted people to know I have a gun, I would carry it in open view on my belt. I have the right to do that in Oregon (and in most western states). As for...

A Gun Thread About Absolutely Nothing!

Reba, I know what you mean. I belong to group of action-steel shooters. We're men and women who carry concealed or are regularly armed with duty weapons (military, law enforcement, security, etc.). Shooters stand side-by-side and shoot down steel silhouettes, usually enough targets to force a...

Man With Concealed Carry License Shot By Police During Traffic Stop

I have a CWP (concealed weapon permit) and always carry. I'm deaf. When stopped by police for any reason (roadblock, fire in the area, accident ahead, etcetera), I keep my hands at the top of my steering and do NOT move them unless instructed to do so. I watch the officer's mouth until he or she...

    Dallas Police Shooting News

Only time and investigation of each separate and unique incident of shooting by police officers can lay blame on racial bias, because not all victims are people of color. Some are of various races and most are resisting arrest. On the other hand, the killer in Dallas is a self-proclaimed racist...

    Deaf Hearing Relationships

My spouse of ten years is a hearie who has learned ASL. I'm late deafened and speak, but I have a deaf sister and am fluent with ASL. I was 20 years hard-of-hearing before I became totally deaf, so I sort of read lips. Then I took speechreading classes at Montana School for the Deaf and got...
