    Cochlear implant surgery is Safe!!

Sometimes I read a little too much into people's posts, so I appreciate the clarification. :)

First the ear now the eye

Since I was born blind, I wouldn't opt for a retinal implant. However, I think it would be a great option for children, adults who have suddenly lost their vision or the elderly who can no longer drive. When I was in blind rehab, I heard clients talk about how emotionally difficult it was to...

First the ear now the eye

deafdude, Why do you think a retinal implant carries more risks than stem cells? There are numerous cases of congenitally blind people who have implants and are doing quite well. Just curious as to how you arrived at this conclusion. Thanks in advance for any explanation you can share.

Cochlea America coming out with a new Processor?

DeafLissa, I haven't been able to read through the entire thread, but are you thinking about getting a second CI or a CI to replace the one you have? Whatever the case may be, I wish you all the best! :)

    Cochlear implant surgery is Safe!!

rockdrummer, I know I'm going off topic here, but I wanted to make a slight correction if you don't mind. In the blind community, there is no such thing as being "culturally blind." People like myself who were born blind are referred to as congenitally blind. Just thought I'd point that out for...

    Audiogram vs Real life

I also wanted to add that I can hear all of the high frequencies of music as well as differences between letters that sound alike. (i.e. d and g)

    Audiogram vs Real life

deafdude, I wanted to clarify that the reason I had 6 high frequency electrodes turned off is because they were causing dizziness and nausea. As FJ has pointed out, the high frequency electrodes that were disabled were shifted to other electrodes. My audi told me that turning off electrodes...

I couldn't agree more. I've experienced several kinds of trauma in my life, but that isn't preventing me from entering the field of social work/counseling. I also have other challenges. However, they will not prevent me from attaining my goals. Some of the best counselors, social workers, etc...

Cochlea America coming out with a new Processor?

Would you mind sharing that information with me? I can't access the graphical information due to my screen reader and I'm interested in finding out more. Thanks! :)

    It's not JUST dB...

This is very true -- especially in my case. During the 4 years I've had my first CI and 3 years I've had my second, I went from having all of my electrodes turned on to having 6 high frequency electrodes deactivated. As a result, I'm able to understand speech much better (especially in noise and...

    Residual hearing after CI

If for some reason the hybrid CI does not work out as expected, a "regular" CI can be surgically implanted. I know 3 people with hybrid CIs who are doing quite well and are very pleased with their implants. As far as transposition aids are concerned, one important thing to remember is the...

I can say the same thing. I'm currently working with a wonderful therapist who has helped me deal with my issues and I've achieved all of my goals that I wanted to attain. Right now we are progressing to getting me back in school and looking into employment options. If truth be told, I don't...

Most insurance companies pay the entire cost for a session. You're right. It can be expensive, but the results can be life-changing. :)

    Residual hearing after CI

FJ is right. There are most certainly cases where people retain their residual hearing following surgery. The one thing to remember is that not all of the cochlear fluid may be released. Insertion depth of electrodes also plays a part in this. Many people in the field of medicine, deafness and...

Cochlear Implants, why you may want to wait.

I'd be interested in this information as well. I've done quite a bit of research regarding blindness and so far, I haven't read anything that points to a cure in the near future. The closest they have come is the bionic eye, but that's completely different from stem cells.

    Balance issues anyone?

LOL! I wish! This season has been just awful for allergies. My GP told me most of her patients have been complaining of very bad allergies. I was able to get along just fine on my allergy meds alone for the past 2 years, but this spring, I started having more difficulty, so she prescribed a...
