Anyone here adopted and found birth family

Hi Nomad, sorry I havent been online for a bit, will explain about that shortly. I think by the 70's, 80's things had pretty much changed with adoption, much more open and often meetings between birth and adoptive parents. Its amazing how many friends and aquaintances I have who are adopted. I...

    When a Child Says No

Thanks to every one who replied, its always interesting to hear about peoples everyday lives, the reason why daily tv soaps are so popular I suppose....lol The communication tools like email and text are things I use but have never used a terp. The fast food drive thrus I have never tried...

    When a Child Says No

Can someone please give me some background on ASL. My main question is, is a person who relys entirely on ASL, no oral at all, able to conduct their business, shopping banking etc on their own, or do they need a terp to go with them? I should imagine there would not be very many shopkeepers etc...

    When a Child Says No

Can you give me a bit of background on your day to day life, I am fairly new here and very interested to know how a person copes with everyday things that the sighted take for granted. Do you live alone, with family, flatmates etc? How do you use the computer? My biggest fear has always been...

    When a Child Says No

Dixie, I see what you are saying but to my mind waiting until a child is 10 or 11 to see if they want CI just makes it harder, the early years are so important for learning speech. However I know that no one is going to "win" this debate of oralism/signing, implanting or not implanting. Every...

    "Letting the Child Decide"

So you mean there is no blind culture,....and why is loss of eyesight any different from loss of hearing? I am not disrespecting deaf culture, just trying to understand why it is ok to "fix" one problem but not another. Do you think deafness is more complex than blindness?

    "Letting the Child Decide"

maybe I should have said HEARING babies babble, if you read my post correctly you will see that I was a deaf baby, hence a very quiet one.

Anyone here adopted and found birth family

If your happy in your family then theres no need to search, I didnt but am glad they found me. I think its only in a not so happy adoption that the child may want to go looking, but having said that my 2 bests friends where happy and they stilled looked and found birth parents..

    "Letting the Child Decide"

well its not a very good model if they keep bashing each other. I used to think having a disability or whatever you like to call it made people more tolerant.

    "Letting the Child Decide"

Deafdyke...what I was getting at was not growing new limbs or the blind magicly seeing again, I was refering to prosethics, artificial limbs, and for eyesight just ordinary glasses...I mean if one is short sighted why dont they say "well that is how I was born, that is my culture" and stay short...

    "Letting the Child Decide"

Hi, I have mentioned in other threads that I am on the waiting list for CI, however owing to the long list and small amount done per year I may never get it done. I wear h/a now, always have so do have sound, it is actually quite loud but not the clarity that CI would, hopefully, provide. My...

    "Letting the Child Decide"

Easy one.........babies babble because they like the hear their own voices, havent you ever seen a small baby make a sound, maybe a louder sound than it has made before, stop, listen, then repeat the same sound.......my mother always said I was a very quiet baby, maybe be cause I couldnt hear my...

    When a Child Says No

There is really no comparison between sex change and CI, everyone knows that the sooner a child hears the quicker and better speach developement will be, waiting until 18 or 20 means the child will probably never learn to speak. I do have some transexual friends so I know that side of the...
