How long have you and fiancee been together? I think I read that you got engaged just recently?.....congrats by the way! I also read in your thread that you were enjoying social life much more now, not just sitting in corner. I can imagine this would make a huge difference to you life and...

I bet you find that very empowering, just beign able to do simple things that others take for granted. Like when text phone came out, it changed my whole life being able to text hairdresser, doc etc and do my own appointments.

What is a polite way to get a deaf/hoh person's attention?

Jeez that must make life hard. I find a light tap on the arm, shoulder,, or knee (if sitting in car) is the easiest way of doing things. The light switch act does work if I am alone in a room and someone is way across at the door. My dear departed mother had a rather offputting habit of...

    Question

To be quite honest Shel I cant understand why jillio even asked the original question. I have read over it several time still cant see the point. Yes HA is an assistive device, yes CI is an assistive device, both help with sound perception, maybe one helps better than others depending on the...

    CI Relationships

The change does not come from the CI per se, it comes from the new found confidence that CI gives one, the same could happen with HA if never worn before. I never said people change for the worse, just that they change in some way. What is wrong with allowing youself to become more confident...

The Elena I am refering to does not post on alldeaf, she is totally oral so her husband would not need sign language and she certainyl doesnt need speech therapy. She is in fact the post girl for CI here in NZ, if you look at the pindrop site posted below there is a pic of her with hubby and...

    CI Relationships

No one has the right to control another person, but it is very easy to fall into the pattern of letting a hearie do things which we may not be able to (use phone, speak for us in some situations etc ) that before we know it the other person thinks they are indespencable, which is fine of the...

    Question

I'm not sure what the purpose of this question is, however one could argue that even an old fashioned horn in the ear would be an assistive device, whether it provides clarity is another matter. As a very new implantee I can tell you from my point of view, and without multi research papers...

What is a polite way to get a deaf/hoh person's attention?

The only problem here, Chase, is that sometime we deafies hear things whilst at others we wont, for me it depends (that word again!) on length of sound, background noise and just plain if I am B... listening. So the chances of someone PROVING I am "hearing" is about 50/50

What is a polite way to get a deaf/hoh person's attention?

Most certainly do Jillio, that was the whole point of question. Just some peoples idea of polite might not be yours or mine.

Having CI does not change the person you are but it can be a huge confidence booster, changing someone who just sat quietly in the corner into the life and soul of the party. This would of course be disconcerting for the hearing partner who may be used to having control or being a "crutch" for...

Not necessarily abusive R2D2, the people I have spoken to here dont have that problem. One of them is a very outgoing lady who runs PR and fundraising for Pindrop here, she used to run a personal agency before losing a bit too much hearing to be able to use phone. I was amazed when she mentioned...

Thats wonderful, tho I do think its could be easier if the man is deaf rather than the woman. Women are generally the nurturers and used to watching out for others. Unless a man is the caring sort he isnt always so good at these things.

    Grannies CI Diary

I suoppose you could say quacking, everyone seems to have their own take on the sound, most say its like chipmunks on helium. Mine was parrot on crack, just to be different. My next mapping is not for another month, had 2 days last week, then 1 day this week so now they leave me alone for a...
