HoH and feeling a bit isolated

B/c the experience is very different, and the info is very much Hearing Health 101, rather then emphasis on community. It's like the difference between a young person's Blind support group vs a VI group for older age aquired sight issues.

BTW, not only is HLAA not exactly interesting, it has connections to AG Bell. Dhh from birth/early childhood are automaticly enrolled in AG Bell's membership. It's also against dhh kids being educated bilingally. It also thinks that there's money to unwrap by keeping dhh young people dependant...

*snort* No, it's about that particular organization. I know you like it, but it does tend towards older late deafened people simply b/c of the demographics of hearing loss. If there were other groups I'd strongly reccomend them.

How to get involved with the Deaf community?

Don't say "only" HOH. Most dhh as kids people have been raised pretty much "like hearing" in the past few decades. Even 30 years ago kids were mainstreamed to the max and grew up oral.

Why does that hurt your feelings? You know I've been told by members of HLAA that their approach is boring. 90% of the reason why they're members is due to the socialization.

Kansas School for the Deaf is in Olathe. Much more interesting then HLAA, especially for young people. http://www.ksdeaf.org/

    New to Hearing Loss

Very funny. But yeah, there are still deaf losses where they can benefit from HA. Response to hearing tech is almost indivdual, Remember how back in the 80's and '90's there were still lots of kids in oral deaf programs with HA?

    New to Hearing Loss

People can still benefit from hearing aids if they're severe/profound. A deaf loss doesn't auotmaticly qualify you for a CI

    New to Hearing Loss

Opt for BTEs. Those are the most powerful and can give you the best sound. Yes, try ASL. ASL and deaf culture are a lot more fun for younger dhh people, rather then the Hearing Health 101 approach that's like reading one of those pamphets that you get from the audilogistss.

    New to Hearing Loss

She has moderate loss in her other ear, and there are still deaf people who can get to HOH levels with hearing aids. Not all deaf people automaticly qualify for CIs.

Could anyone help me with a hw assignment?

Intel? Are you looking for a Deaf James Bond?

Cochlear Implant affects on Deaf Culture?

The problem isn't CIs. The problem is AVT mentality where dhh kids just need a speech exclusive approach with little/no ASL or exposure to the hearing world. You see the exact same thing with HOH people with HAs. The answer is to give kids everything!

    Hello from an old friend

Oh yeah, I forgot that you were in Oregon, and it's mostly just outreach right? No formal classes any more. I'm wondering if you could take advantage of Washington School for the Blind's resources. I just checked and their school is only for 6th through 12th graders. Too bad as I was thinking...
