Are you deaf & dating a hearing person?

. Thanks. I appreciate your input. Makes sense. Dating and relationships can be difficult enough without adding a language barrier into the equation. =)

1,000-Pound Rhode Island Man Transported Via Crane, Flatbed Truck

Wowzers. I'm from Rhode Island. Hopefully Tom Brady's hair will be enough of a distraction from this disaster of a news story. =) I'm a nurse... residents have the right to order out. Many do... often to excess. Or as mentioned above, they have family and friends bring it in against medical advice.

Are you deaf & dating a hearing person?

I read today that there is something like 380,000,000 hearing people in the US.... and 1,000,000 deaf... so it makes sense that deaf people would date hearing. There's a lot more of us. Granted, there are some cities, like DC (where I live), with a large deaf community. Making it easier for...

New! Hearing with interest in deaf culture

Thank you for the welcome! I don't have enough experience with deaf/hearing social integration to give advice. I have been told that often, in a group of hearing and deaf individuals, they separate like oil and water. It just migrates that way "naturally". Generally speaking some people...

New! Hearing with interest in deaf culture

Thank you for your reply. Beyond this new dating experience I've always wanted to learn a second language. Sign language would be an excellent skill to possess. Promoting different forms communication and eye contact would be an asset in my career and personal life.

Are you deaf & dating a hearing person?

I totally get that Deaf people aren't disabled. The guy I'm interested in has never heard a sound. He has exceptional verbal/writing/lip reading skills... in addition to ASL being his primary form of communication. He's social, does a lot of traveling, and is active in his community. LOL @...

New! Hearing with interest in deaf culture

Congratulations! I love to hear relationship success stories. LOL @ him not being totally fluent after 8yrs together and a zillion classes... that makes me feel better about signing the few signs I know like a toddler. Trust me, I'm not trying to impress anyone that I can sign "pumpkin". =)...

Are you deaf & dating a hearing person?

I used "clinically" because I'm a nurse and I've worked with many-many patients who are deaf or HOH as a result of old age.... but none who were born deaf and very few who became deaf as a result of injury or illness. So, I apologize for the use of wrong terminology. It seems to me, in my...

New! Hearing with interest in deaf culture

Thanks for the warm welcome and prompt reply . 8yrs! *high-five* That's an incredible benchmark in any relationship. Even more remarkable when there are language/cultural differences. We both seem patient and understanding. But I feel in our specific situation a greater amount of patience...

Love it. Thanks! I'm cooler than the other side of the pillow. I think learning ASL would certainly skyrocket my coolness and improve my communication skills with both hearing and deaf individuals. Having FUN is my favorite!

New! Hearing with interest in deaf culture

Sound advice. Thanks. Dating this gentleman aside, ASL has always been an interest of mine. I do a lot of work with young children. Most recently with a 1yo with verbal apraxia. Knowing sign, beyond a few elementary ones, would've have certainly enhanced our communication and his learning...
