I'm working on 3rd shift now and was wondering what do ya'll prefer and why? I have never worked on a 3rd shift before and I feel funny. I'm really scared too.. because of leaving my daughter home all night without me being there.. of course with a babysitter but I'm just not there.

you should be alright. you may find sleeping during the day a little hard at time especially when you have your daughter. when you mention 3rd shift. is it the graveyard period ie. example 11pm to 7am?

My advice, you better spend time with your daughter, she really need you be there for her..

My older son was live with me for 9 years and half, i work two shift morning and night.. He felt that I lost interest to focus on him that he wanted me stay with him in night. I ignored his required.. thats good enough his mother took my son away from me.. he made me realize that i did not pay attention his need and require... the mistaken I made.. Now I am focus him more than ever.. He now changed his mind, he want to live with me again.. I am still fight over my son for custody to me against his mother. I am still go to court... I dont want you step in my same mistaken I made.

That's perfectly normal to feel this way. I've been there and through that before. You are not the only one.

I used to work on 2nd and 3rd shift when I was workin' at Post Office in 1990. My kids were at their father's to babysit until I came home to pick them up. I ALWAYS brought home some flavors of different kind of drinks ( juices ) that I got from the Post Office for my kids. They were sooo excited to see it. LOL Of course, they drank them immediately. It was like they were openin' their presents. It made me BIG smiles to see them like this.

I am sure you will be just fine unless, if you want somethin' to bring home that you got from your work - try to bring somethin' for your kids and see how that goes ? Hmm ? Maybe, that will make you feel better afterwards ? :D

Been there.. done that

I understand exactly what you're saying. I've worked plenty of night/3rd shifts and like working 2nd much better. Here's a link that I found last year. Good luck.

Here is my thread about my first time working 3rd shift http://www.alldeaf.com/general-chat/28503-graveyard-third-3rd-shift.html?highlight=Graveyard

I had to work double shifts- 2pm saturday til 7am sunday then went back to work at 8pm on sunday. While I worked, people kept on coming telling us that we may not adjourn at 7am, and it would be tomorrow night: I was like oh okay.

While working overnight, btwn 3am- 6 30 am was slow, so lucky I bought my laptop and DVD so we could watch movie since there wasn't many customers. I even ordered pizza at midnight and went out got pizzas for me and my co workers to eat since Domino's was open until 2am. I got home, I had to wash my work clothes because I didn't had any clean work clothes left due to working 7 days in row without a day off.... It was very beatiful seeing sunrise and sunset through the windows. I slept all day, didn't go to family function (thank god I ditched them, and got to sleep, and my mom knew so left me alone)

Well, I am back to work on Jan 3 2007, so it will be crazy again after midpoint of session. See what happen next year if we have to open all night or not....

I've went thru all shifts. I like 1st and 2nd shift and HATES graveyard!! It make sooo sleepy!!! OMG! SO BORING!!! Sooo if I get a job I'll go for 1st or 2nd shift. :)

1st and 2nd shift is alots more healthy but being on 2nd shift you get to sleep more which means you will be much more healthy and run errands before going to work. The 3rd shift is good for young people but the young people need to be thinking about moving up with a promotion to a daytime job because there are plenty of another people who will take the 3rd shift job so you don't want to be on 3rd shift for too long, especially when you are young and getting married then starting a family and those night shifts really would not help your family life on the homefront. I have seen people who worked 3rd shift for many years 10, 15 or 20 years and once they go to a natural schedule like a new job on 1st or 2nd shift or they are finally in retirement. Their health and body clock naturally resets itself and they are bouncing back stronger than ever. The body clock speaks louder than the hours you are putting in for work and sleep on 3rd shift even if you are a young guy or a young girl working so that is something else to think about because the rhythm of the body clock speaks louder than anything else.

Well.. you guys can stop helping me... I QUIT!!!!! I couldn't do it. i wasn't getting any sleep at all during the day, too hot at work (no ac) I have asthma so it wasn't any good for me to work there. sucker!

One afternoon i was trying to sleep and I forgot that my daughter had soccer practice that evening.. so i didn't get any sleep at all and forget that. I don't see how it works when you're a single mother/father and working 2nd or 3rd shifts. I really don't see how it works. I can see alot of people can manage well. I don't have any family here, just Tweetybirdie trying to help me.

we can continue to discuss if you want, but I'm no longer working 3rd and never will again!!!

1st shift jobs are good for people who have families.

2nd jobs are good for single people with no family or for people with a family to earn extra income.

*nodding agreement* You are not only one. It also affect some of my friends as well. It got them panic and go back to 2nd shift. (1st shift - 6.00 am to 2.00 pm and 2nd shift 2.00 pm to 10.00 pm), not more 3rd shift. 3rd shift is suitable for single or childless married.

I would suggest you to take XBGMER´s advice.

1st to 2nd shift is no problem but 3rd shift...

that sucks don't it.. having asthma and being in the heat surely don't mix. glad you moved to 2nd and maybe soon before long, you'll move to 1st? I don't think I could work 2nd shift. My daughter play sports and plays on most evenings and saturdays. Can't miss her games! So it either has to be 1st or 3rd for me.. so 3rd didn't work out.. I guess I'm going for 1st shift. Wish me luck on job hunting.. again.

Why not to go bed during school hours saying 9.00am and wake up at 2.30-3.00pm before you collect kid from school or they come home by bus????
Remember I only suggestion this 3rd shift okay!!

Yea, Im not so quite sure about AC with humidity controlled environment! When I transfer to warehouse, there is no AC in warehouse my lungs seems so happy! Weird! My home, it is fully AC and very low humidity (no controls on humidity) no problem, I don't understand at all.

I know what you mean. When I was working, I had to use my inhaler twice.. but I was expected that I was gonna wheeze the whole night. I was sweating my ass off. My shirt was soaked, pants was attached to my legs.. not comfortable! When I'm at home with AC and low humidity too.. I'm all good. If its 100 outside with very low humidity, I'm good. The worse is the high percentage of the humidity.. I hate it. My asthma is severe. Its no fun at all. :pissed:
