Know about Sorenson

One part of this article missed the point, it does not include next 3 year rate cuts plan set buy FCC, they only include the last July cuts by FCC. When next three cuts comes in they can't keep at 200mil profit to pay for all employees, and other costs, the less they get, the less quality we will see. Even more, FCC is seriously considering phase out the minutes rate, change to per customer basis. For example, FCC would pay say $1,500 dollars per customer a year, that would provide average maybe 20 hours a year of VRS service per person, and IF several customers that company has average 200 hours a year, what do you think VRS is going to do with these customers?

Now you see, Pat Nola isn't the owner of the company, he is just CEO following the rules set by the investors. Because of recent ruling changes by FCC, Sorenson predict that they can't pay back and wants to act NOW than wait and regret.

Keep this in mind, we once had 51 VRS provider, white label or not, investors or banks don't give a damn whats difference between them. Now with only 5, I bet you ass that in near future where we may see two or three left and NO investors will be interest in invest new VRS company and in the end there won't be much competition and we will be stuck with THAT quality of true monopoly that will be coming in near future. (Even if Sorenson's out of business, we will definetly have a true but lousy monopoly).

I don't know how many of you Deaf really give a serious thanks to Sorenson for providing FREE VP-100, VP-200, NtouchVP, and none of them are cheap because of low production rate (same with TTY which cost too much, right?)

I appreciated Sorenson for rich experience and thank them for all the service they provided to me.

SorensonVP VP said next gen VPs will be coming soon. I dislike them waste money for new VPs.

To meet FCC requirements, thats why!

AND to catch up with compatibility

You see, if you have a computer from 1993, will today software going to work on these machines? Why not? We can NOT escape from innovation, innovation is everywhere and here to stay.

And this proves that you are old man already! Most old men don't like changes, including myself.

So how are they planning on changing out the ntouches? It took some of my friends a while to upgrade from vp200s to ntouch. Is n touch neeeded to xhange to next vp?

I dunno, it could be 100% software and no more hardware VP. I am not sure where they are getting money from to develop next generation VP hardware. Research, engineering, testing, government approval, test for safety, and many other stuff, all these stuff have to get going though before they even release to public. It takes years AND of course you guessed it… Greenbacks.

You see, Need greenback, where get? You guess it again, it is from investors.

I just had this thought, did you realize that as shown in bankruptcy and timeline of Sorenson, they mention they have only 120,000 Deaf customers. From my standpoint it appears to be very very small number of Deaf benefitting from VRS, and I believe we have at least a million Deaf people out there, wondering why they aren't using them? I know many can't use due to technology limitation like no DSL or Cable services, but I am pretty sure there are significant number of Deaf people have the High speed internet access but why aren't they using them?

You see, with so small number of Deaf customers Sorenson has, and Sorenson once had whats called "Tele Education Program" as TEP trying to educate Deaf people what is available for them, sadly many not aware of this wonderful service. Now that FCC don't like this, and decided to force Sorenson close the TEP program. FCC has already approve cuts in outreach programs by disallow all VRS doing outreach, and FCC select only one provider focusing outreach program. Will this going to help the rest of innocent Deaf people that missed out the opportunities?

I have seen Sorenson contributes to Deaf community more than many of you who may have realize.

The FCC is trying to do this
Services to support the development and implementation of a Neutral Video Communication Platform (NCP) and provide NCP operations and maintenance service Home | FCC.gov

Sound like for example Google or Verizon to develop and implement a Neutral Video Communication Platform (NCP) for the 4 VRS companies.

because majority of them are late-deaf and older people. they do not know ASL nor care for it.

no idea but they're phasing out VP200s in favor of ntouch because of FCC will no longer reimburse Sorenson for it.

Hmm interesting cause I am trying to remove stuff to make space (too much clutter) I called Sorenson and asked them if they wanted the VP-200 back since they legally own it. They said they do and sent me a UPS Label to send it back. Wonder what they plan to do with it.

Can you prove it? Have you take thousands calls from Deaf people that knows sign language and whats their telephone preference, what did they know that exists? There are more than 10 million with some degrees of hearing losses, at least a million that knows ASL, not just 120K, thats way too low.

You haven't sit and listen to thousands and thousands of Deaf people asking questions about VP. I have, and heard too many times, that many Deaf that CAN sign had NO clue until "Just now" (Last time I heard like this probably few days before I left Sorenson, and that was 2012!). Often I asked them why not try VP earlier. I heard plenty of excuses, one is afraid of high telephone bills which we know is not true, secondly they don't want ISP to be their telephone company and get more bills, again we all know it is myth, other things like they think there are restrictions exist and were afraid to be penalized, like 30 minutes limit usage, and afraid they would be addicted to it and lose it due not enough use VRS, etc and so on, many simply had no idea but CAN ASL, and there are no limitation or rules other than whats on EULA! I have seen much more than you did. Remember I was on front end taking hundred thousands of calls for years. There are actually plenty of myths I heard from thousands of Deafies DIRECTLY! Sad? YEP! That is part reason why I was kinda of upset that FCC think we don't need TEP (Tele-Education Program).

From time to time I did hear angry Deaf customers blamed Sorenson for their very high local telephone bill that they just received and thought we charged them excessive, but you KNOW it is not possible that Sorenson billed anyone. I have to refer them to their telephone co, as we have nothing to do with their phone bill and are in no way have any connection whatsoever.

You have to understand when I work for Sorenson, I can NOT voice for Deaf customers due to conflict of interest with FCC. But what I can do is let you guys KNOW what I actually saw, and heard, then it is UP to you to believe and fight for Deaf's own communication functionality equilivent, not just for yourself but for everybody who may benefit from it!

Before CIR (Customer Information Resources) department was founded, I take several free VP applications several times on daily basis until CIR took over, so STILL there are hundred, thousands of Deaf people that knows ASL still out there in the dark!

Next time, go to any Deaf Expo, and pay attention to Sorenson booth see how may Deaf filling application for free VP, you will be shocked to see how many actually don't have one but want one.

While I do agree we need neutral platform, what I think need to be done, of course it is going to cost FCC even more is allow all VRS provider do research and develop one and whichever gets most wanted equipment for Deaf community can lead to standard platform and this would be considered a permanent term investment which usually cost much more than normal, just exact what happened back then in 1930s where most hearing people uses AT&T equipment the most, while competitors do have their own telephone set and not compatible with AT&T telephone. Its cheaper to select majority of customers that use that particular platform so that the change will be less impact on everybody. Right now FCC idea with VRS, it will negatively impact everybody and hurt more than less.

I personally would like to see Sorenson's platform to become standardize, because more than 60% are using it! It does not make sense throw away most popular equipment away and replace with potential less quality platform.

I have tried most of VRS owned equipment, and I still prefer VP-200, or even better VP-100! Its due to video quality. ASL is a visual language, so video quality should be at highest priority.

Explaining about Neutral Platform. See vlog.

One example that you may be pissed off at what I HEARD and SEEN and it does devastated me when I couldn't help them, and it is not once, not even twice, but several times!

Hearing parents prohibited their own Deaf kids that signs from getting Videophone out of fear double dipping phone bills and long distance, etc. even fearing their Deaf child would spy on their telephone conversations! (Myth, of course) Only very few were for discipline purpose and mostly were temporarily and I am okay with it but not permanently. This is another reason why Tele-Education Program at Sorenson was set up, to help hearing parents understand how it works and how they can supervise them and so on.

Deaf kids deserve fair share of communication opportunities like their hearing peers.

....... and the fact still remains that a very very large percentage of "deaf" population are late-deaf and do not care for ASL and are not culturally deaf and identified themselves as hard-of-hearing.....

You missed my point, only 120,000 in whole country as United States and its territories knows sign language? I don't believe it is true number of people, I believe there are at least A Million or two that knows Sign language and speak ASL. Perhaps about 15 Millions out there that have some degrees of Deafness but don't sign, and they can talk and maybe lipreading

State the fact that there are only just 120,000 Deaf people that knows the sign language please!

My last recollection is there are about 500K that know ASL but I have forgotten how/what data was used to arrive at that number....

I've never said there are about 120,000 deafies who know ASL. I'm sure there are more but I've only said MAJORITY of "deaf" population are late-deaf older adults and identified themselves as HOH. they are not culturally deaf and they do not care for ASL. they are probably clueless about deaf people and deaf culture.
